Ephesians 5

NLT 1 Follow God's example in everything you do, because you are his dear children. NIV 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children NLT 2 Live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ, who loved you and gave himself as a sacrifice to take away your sins. And God was pleased, because that sacrifice was like sweet perfume to him. NIV 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. NLT 3 Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God's people. NIV 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. NLT 4 Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes -- these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. NIV 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. NLT 5 You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is really an idolater who worships the things of this world. NIV 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. NLT 6 Don't be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the terrible anger of God comes upon all those who disobey him. NIV 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. NLT 7 Don't participate in the things these people do. NIV 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. NLT 8 For though your hearts were once full of darkness, now you are full of light from the Lord, and your behavior should show it! NIV 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light NLT 9 For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. NIV 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) NLT 10 Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. NIV 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. NLT 11 Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, rebuke and expose them. NIV 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. NLT 12 It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. NIV 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. NLT 13 But when the light shines on them, it becomes clear how evil these things are. NIV 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, NLT 14 And where your light shines, it will expose their evil deeds. This is why it is said, "Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light." NIV 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." NLT 15 So be careful how you live, not as fools but as those who are wise. NIV 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, NLT 16 Make the most of every opportunity for doing good in these evil days. NIV 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. NLT 17 Don't act thoughtlessly, but try to understand what the Lord wants you to do. NIV 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. NLT 18 Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you. NIV 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. NLT 19 Then you will sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, making music to the Lord in your hearts. NIV 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, NLT 20 And you will always give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. NLT 21 And further, you will submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. NIV 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. NLT 22 You wives will submit to your husbands as you do to the Lord. NIV 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. NLT 23 For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of his body, the church; he gave his life to be her Savior. NIV 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. NLT 24 As the church submits to Christ, so you wives must submit to your husbands in everything. NIV 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. NLT 25 And you husbands must love your wives with the same love Christ showed the church. He gave up his life for her NIV 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her NLT 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by baptism and God's word. NIV 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, NLT 27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. NIV 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. NLT 28 In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man is actually loving himself when he loves his wife. NIV 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. NLT 29 No one hates his own body but lovingly cares for it, just as Christ cares for his body, which is the church. NIV 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- NLT 30 And we are his body. NIV 30 for we are members of his body. NLT 31 As the Scriptures say, "A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one." NIV 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." NLT 32 This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. NIV 32 This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. NLT 33 So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. NIV 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
