Exodus 20

ASV 1 And God spake all these words, saying, NIV 1 And God spoke all these words: ASV 2 I am Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. NIV 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. ASV 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. NIV 3 "You shall have no other gods before me. ASV 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness [of any thing] that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. NIV 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. ASV 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them, for I Jehovah thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me, NIV 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, ASV 6 and showing lovingkindness unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments. NIV 6 but showing love to a thousand [ generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments. ASV 7 Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. NIV 7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. ASV 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. NIV 8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. ASV 9 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work; NIV 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, ASV 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath unto Jehovah thy God: [in it] thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: NIV 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. ASV 11 for in six days Jehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore Jehovah blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. NIV 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. ASV 12 Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee. NIV 12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. ASV 13 Thou shalt not kill. NIV 13 "You shall not murder. ASV 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. NIV 14 "You shall not commit adultery. ASV 15 Thou shalt not steal. NIV 15 "You shall not steal. ASV 16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. NIV 16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. ASV 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's. NIV 17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." ASV 18 And all the people perceived the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the voice of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they trembled, and stood afar off. NIV 18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance ASV 19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die. NIV 19 and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die." ASV 20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before you, that ye sin not. NIV 20 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning." ASV 21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was. NIV 21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was. ASV 22 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. NIV 22 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites this: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven: ASV 23 Ye shall not make [other gods] with me; gods of silver, or gods of gold, ye shall not make unto you. NIV 23 Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold. ASV 24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in every place where I record my name I will come unto thee and I will bless thee. NIV 24 " 'Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you. ASV 25 And if thou make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stones; for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. NIV 25 If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it. ASV 26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not uncovered thereon. NIV 26 And do not go up to my altar on steps, lest your nakedness be exposed on it.'
