Exodus 20:1-7

NLT 1 Then God gave the people all these instructions : NIV 1 And God spoke all these words: NLT 2 “I am the your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery. NIV 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. NLT 3 “You must not have any other god but me. NIV 3 "You shall have no other gods before me. NLT 4 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. NIV 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. NLT 5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. NIV 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, NLT 6 But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands. NIV 6 but showing love to a thousand [ generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments. NLT 7 “You must not misuse the name of the your God. The will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name. NIV 7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
