MSG 1 "Make an Altar for burning incense. Construct it from acacia wood, NIV 1 "Make an altar of acacia wood for burning incense. MSG 2 one and one-half feet square and three feet high with its horns of one piece with it. NIV 2 It is to be square, a cubit long and a cubit wide, and two cubits high--its horns of one piece with it. MSG 3 Cover it with a veneer of pure gold, its top, sides, and horns, and make a gold molding around it NIV 3 Overlay the top and all the sides and the horns with pure gold, and make a gold molding around it. MSG 4 with two rings of gold beneath the molding. Place the rings on the two opposing sides to serve as holders for poles by which it will be carried. NIV 4 Make two gold rings for the altar below the molding--two on opposite sides--to hold the poles used to carry it. MSG 5 Make the poles of acacia wood and cover them with a veneer of gold. NIV 5 Make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. MSG 6 "Place the Altar in front of the curtain that hides the Chest of The Testimony, in front of the Atonement-Cover that is over The Testimony where I will meet you. NIV 6 Put the altar in front of the curtain that is before the ark of the Testimony--before the atonement cover that is over the Testimony--where I will meet with you. MSG 7 Aaron will burn fragrant incense on it every morning when he polishes the lamps, NIV 7 "Aaron must burn fragrant incense on the altar every morning when he tends the lamps. MSG 8 and again in the evening as he prepares the lamps for lighting, so that there will always be incense burning before God, generation after generation. NIV 8 He must burn incense again when he lights the lamps at twilight so incense will burn regularly before the LORD for the generations to come. MSG 9 But don't burn on this Altar any unholy incense or Whole-Burnt-Offering or Grain-Offering. And don't pour out Drink-Offerings on it. NIV 9 Do not offer on this altar any other incense or any burnt offering or grain offering, and do not pour a drink offering on it. MSG 10 Once a year Aaron is to purify the Altar horns. Using the blood of the Absolution-Offering of atonement, he is to make this atonement every year down through the generations. It is most holy to God." The Atonement-Tax NIV 10 Once a year Aaron shall make atonement on its horns. This annual atonement must be made with the blood of the atoning sin offering for the generations to come. It is most holy to the LORD." MSG 11 God spoke to Moses: NIV 11 Then the LORD said to Moses, MSG 12 "When you take a head count of the Israelites to keep track of them, all must pay an atonement-tax to God for their life at the time of being registered so that nothing bad will happen because of the registration. NIV 12 "When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the LORD a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them. MSG 13 Everyone who gets counted is to give a half-shekel (using the standard Sanctuary shekel of a fifth of an ounce to the shekel) - a half-shekel offering to God. NIV 13 Each one who crosses over to those already counted is to give a half shekel, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs. This half shekel is an offering to the LORD. MSG 14 Everyone counted, age twenty and up, is to make the offering to God. NIV 14 All who cross over, those twenty years old or more, are to give an offering to the LORD. MSG 15 The rich are not to pay more nor the poor less than the half-shekel offering to God, the atonement-tax for your lives. NIV 15 The rich are not to give more than a half shekel and the poor are not to give less when you make the offering to the LORD to atone for your lives. MSG 16 Take the atonement-tax money from the Israelites and put it to the maintenance of the Tent of Meeting. It will be a memorial fund for the Israelites in honor of God, making atonement for your lives." The Washbasin NIV 16 Receive the atonement money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the Tent of Meeting. It will be a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD, making atonement for your lives." MSG 17 God spoke to Moses: NIV 17 Then the LORD said to Moses, MSG 18 "Make a bronze Washbasin; make it with a bronze base. Place it between the Tent of Meeting and the Altar. Put water in it. NIV 18 "Make a bronze basin, with its bronze stand, for washing. Place it between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water in it. MSG 19 Aaron and his sons will wash their hands and feet in it. NIV 19 Aaron and his sons are to wash their hands and feet with water from it. MSG 20 When they enter the Tent of Meeting or approach the Altar to serve there or offer gift offerings to God, they are to wash so they will not die. NIV 20 Whenever they enter the Tent of Meeting, they shall wash with water so that they will not die. Also, when they approach the altar to minister by presenting an offering made to the LORD by fire, MSG 21 They are to wash their hands and their feet so they will not die. This is the rule forever, for Aaron and his sons down through the generations." Holy Anointing Oil NIV 21 they shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die. This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come." MSG 22 God spoke to Moses: NIV 22 Then the LORD said to Moses, MSG 23 "Take the best spices: twelve and a half pounds of liquid myrrh; half that much, six and a quarter pounds, of fragrant cinnamon; six and a quarter pounds of fragrant cane; NIV 23 "Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant cane, MSG 24 twelve and a half pounds of cassia - using the standard Sanctuary weight for all of them - and a gallon of olive oil. NIV 24 500 shekels of cassia--all according to the sanctuary shekel--and a hin of olive oil. MSG 25 Make these into a holy anointing oil, a perfumer's skillful blend. NIV 25 Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil. MSG 26 "Use it to anoint the Tent of Meeting, the Chest of The Testimony, NIV 26 Then use it to anoint the Tent of Meeting, the ark of the Testimony, MSG 27 the Table and all its utensils, the Lampstand and its utensils, the Altar of Incense, NIV 27 the table and all its articles, the lampstand and its accessories, the altar of incense, MSG 28 the Altar of Whole-Burnt-Offerings and all its utensils, and the Washbasin and its base. NIV 28 the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand. MSG 29 Consecrate them so they'll be soaked in holiness, so that anyone who so much as touches them will become holy. NIV 29 You shall consecrate them so they will be most holy, and whatever touches them will be holy. MSG 30 "Then anoint Aaron and his sons. Consecrate them as priests to me. NIV 30 "Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests. MSG 31 Tell the Israelites, 'This will be my holy anointing oil throughout your generations.' NIV 31 Say to the Israelites, 'This is to be my sacred anointing oil for the generations to come. MSG 32 Don't pour it on ordinary men. Don't copy this mixture to use for yourselves. It's holy; keep it holy. NIV 32 Do not pour it on men's bodies and do not make any oil with the same formula. It is sacred, and you are to consider it sacred. MSG 33 Whoever mixes up anything like it, or puts it on an ordinary person, will be expelled." Holy Incense NIV 33 Whoever makes perfume like it and whoever puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from his people.' " MSG 34 God spoke to Moses: "Take fragrant spices - gum resin, onycha, galbanum - and add pure frankincense. Mix the spices in equal proportions NIV 34 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Take fragrant spices--gum resin, onycha and galbanum--and pure frankincense, all in equal amounts, MSG 35 to make an aromatic incense, the art of a perfumer, salted and pure - holy. NIV 35 and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is to be salted and pure and sacred. MSG 36 Now crush some of it into powder and place some of it before The Testimony in the Tent of Meeting where I will meet with you; it will be for you the holiest of holy places. NIV 36 Grind some of it to powder and place it in front of the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting, where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. MSG 37 When you make this incense, you are not to copy the mixture for your own use. It's holy to God; keep it that way. NIV 37 Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves; consider it holy to the LORD. MSG 38 Whoever copies it for personal use will be excommunicated." NIV 38 Whoever makes any like it to enjoy its fragrance must be cut off from his people."
