Exodus 5

CJB 1 After that, Moshe and Aharon came and said to Pharaoh, "Here is what ADONAI, the God of Isra'el, says: 'Let my people go, so that they can celebrate a festival in the desert to honor me.'" NIV 1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.' " CJB 2 But Pharaoh replied, "Who is ADONAI, that I should obey when he says to let Isra'el go? I don't know ADONAI, and I also won't let Isra'el go." NIV 2 Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go." CJB 3 They said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go three days' journey into the desert, so that we can sacrifice to ADONAI our God. Otherwise, he may strike us with a plague or with the sword." NIV 3 Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword." CJB 4 The king of Egypt answered them, "Moshe and Aharon, what do you mean by taking the people away from their work? Get back to your labor! NIV 4 But the king of Egypt said, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!" CJB 5 Look!" Pharaoh added, "the population of the land has grown, yet you are trying to have them stop working!" NIV 5 Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working." CJB 6 That same day Pharaoh ordered the slavemasters and the people's foremen, NIV 6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and foremen in charge of the people: CJB 7 "You are no longer to provide straw for the bricks the people are making, as you did before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves. NIV 7 "You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. CJB 8 But you will require them to produce the same quantity of bricks as before, don't reduce it, because they're lazing around. This is why they're crying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' NIV 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don't reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' CJB 9 Give these people harder work to do. That will keep them too busy to pay attention to speeches full of lies." NIV 9 Make the work harder for the men so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies." CJB 10 The people's slavemasters went out, their foremen too, and said to the people, "Here is what Pharaoh says: 'I will no longer give you straw. NIV 10 Then the slave drivers and the foremen went out and said to the people, "This is what Pharaoh says: 'I will not give you any more straw. CJB 11 You go, yourselves, and get straw wherever you can find it. But your output is not to be reduced.'" NIV 11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.' " CJB 12 So the people were dispersed throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw. NIV 12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. CJB 13 The slavemasters kept pressing them. "Keep working! Make your daily quota, just as when straw was provided." NIV 13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, "Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw." CJB 14 The foremen of the people of Isra'el, whom Pharaoh's slavemasters had appointed to be over them, were flogged and asked, "Why haven't you fulfilled your quota of bricks yesterday and today, as you did formerly?" NIV 14 The Israelite foremen appointed by Pharaoh's slave drivers were beaten and were asked, "Why didn't you meet your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?" CJB 15 Then the foremen of the people of Isra'el came and complained to Pharaoh: "Why are you treating your servants this way? NIV 15 Then the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: "Why have you treated your servants this way? CJB 16 No straw is given to your servants, yet they keep telling us to make bricks. And now your servants are being flogged, but the fault lies with your own people." NIV 16 Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, 'Make bricks!' Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people." CJB 17 "Lazy!" he retorted, "You're just lazy! That's why you say, 'Let us go and sacrifice to ADONAI.' NIV 17 Pharaoh said, "Lazy, that's what you are--lazy! That is why you keep saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.' CJB 18 Get going now, and get back to work! No straw will be given to you, and you will still deliver the full amount of bricks." NIV 18 Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks." CJB 19 When they said, "You are not to reduce your daily production quota of bricks," the foremen of the people of Isra'el could see that they were in deep trouble. NIV 19 The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, "You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day." CJB 20 As they were leaving Pharaoh, they encountered Moshe and Aharon standing by the road; NIV 20 When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, CJB 21 and they said to them, "May ADONAI look at you and judge accordingly, because you have made us utterly abhorrent in the view of Pharaoh and his servants, and you have put a sword in their hands to kill us!" NIV 21 and they said, "May the LORD look upon you and judge you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us." CJB 22 Moshe returned to ADONAI and said, "ADONAI, why have you treated this people so terribly? What has been the value of sending me? NIV 22 Moses returned to the LORD and said, "O Lord, why have you brought trouble upon this people? Is this why you sent me? CJB 23 For ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has dealt terribly with this people! And you haven't rescued your people at all!" NIV 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all."
