Exodus 5

WBT 1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness. NIV 1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.' " WBT 2 And Pharaoh said, Who [is] the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go. NIV 2 Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go." WBT 3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice to the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword. NIV 3 Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword." WBT 4 And the king of Egypt said to them, Why do ye, Moses and Aaron, hinder the people from their works; go you to your burdens. NIV 4 But the king of Egypt said, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!" WBT 5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now [are] many, and ye make them rest from their burdens. NIV 5 Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working." WBT 6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the task-masters of the people, and their officers, saying, NIV 6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and foremen in charge of the people: WBT 7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore; let them go and gather straw for themselves. NIV 7 "You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. WBT 8 And the number of the bricks which they made heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish [aught] thereof; for they are idle: therefore they cry, saying, Let us go [and] sacrifice to our God. NIV 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don't reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' WBT 9 Let more work be laid upon the men, that they may labor therein: and let them not regard vain words. NIV 9 Make the work harder for the men so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies." WBT 10 And the task-masters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw. NIV 10 Then the slave drivers and the foremen went out and said to the people, "This is what Pharaoh says: 'I will not give you any more straw. WBT 11 Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not aught of your work shall be diminished. NIV 11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.' " WBT 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt, to gather stubble instead of straw. NIV 12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. WBT 13 And the task-masters hastened [them], saying, Fulfill your works, [your] daily tasks, as when there was straw. NIV 13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, "Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw." WBT 14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's task-masters had set over them, were beaten, [and] demanded, Why have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick, both yesterday and to-day, as heretofore? NIV 14 The Israelite foremen appointed by Pharaoh's slave drivers were beaten and were asked, "Why didn't you meet your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?" WBT 15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, Why dealest thou thus with thy servants? NIV 15 Then the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: "Why have you treated your servants this way? WBT 16 There is no straw given to thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and behold, thy servants [are] beaten; but the fault [is] in thy own people. NIV 16 Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, 'Make bricks!' Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people." WBT 17 But he said, Ye [are] idle, [ye are] idle: therefore ye say, Let us go, [and] do sacrifice to the LORD. NIV 17 Pharaoh said, "Lazy, that's what you are--lazy! That is why you keep saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.' WBT 18 Go therefore now, [and] work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the number of bricks. NIV 18 Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks." WBT 19 And the officers of the children of Israel saw [that] they [were] in evil [case], after it was said, Ye shall not diminish [aught] from your bricks of your daily task. NIV 19 The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, "You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day." WBT 20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh: NIV 20 When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, WBT 21 And they said to them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savor to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hands to slay us. NIV 21 and they said, "May the LORD look upon you and judge you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us." WBT 22 And Moses returned to the LORD, and said, Lord, why hast thou [so] ill treated this people? why [is] it [that] thou hast sent me? NIV 22 Moses returned to the LORD and said, "O Lord, why have you brought trouble upon this people? Is this why you sent me? WBT 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all. NIV 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all."
