CEB 1 The LORD said to Moses, "See, I've made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. NIV 1 Then the LORD said to Moses, "See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. CEB 2 You will say everything that I command you, and your brother Aaron will tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites out of his land. NIV 2 You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country. CEB 3 But I'll make Pharaoh stubborn, and I'll perform many of my signs and amazing acts in the land of Egypt. NIV 3 But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and though I multiply my miraculous signs and wonders in Egypt, CEB 4 When Pharaoh refuses to listen to you, then I'll act against Egypt and I'll bring my people the Israelites out of the land of Egypt in military formation by momentous events of justice. NIV 4 he will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites. CEB 5 The Egyptians will come to know that I am the LORD, when I act against Egypt and bring the Israelites out from among them." NIV 5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it." CEB 6 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD commanded them. NIV 6 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD commanded them. CEB 7 Moses was 80 years old and Aaron was 83 when they spoke to Pharaoh. NIV 7 Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh. CEB 8 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, NIV 8 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, CEB 9 "When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Do one of your amazing acts,' then say to Aaron, ‘Take your shepherd's rod and throw it down in front of Pharaoh, and it will turn into a cobra.'" NIV 9 "When Pharaoh says to you, 'Perform a miracle,' then say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,' and it will become a snake." CEB 10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron threw down his shepherd's rod in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it turned into a cobra. NIV 10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. CEB 11 Then Pharaoh called together his wise men and wizards, and Egypt's religious experts did the same thing by using their secret knowledge. NIV 11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: CEB 12 Each one threw down his rod, and they turned into cobras. But then Aaron's rod swallowed up each of their rods. NIV 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs. CEB 13 However, Pharaoh remained stubborn. He wouldn't listen to them, just as the LORD had said. NIV 13 Yet Pharaoh's heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said. CEB 14 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Pharaoh is stubborn. He still refuses to let the people go. NIV 14 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Pharaoh's heart is unyielding; he refuses to let the people go. CEB 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning. As he is going out to the water, make sure you stand at the bank of the Nile River so you will run into him. Bring along the shepherd's rod that turned into a snake. NIV 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the water. Wait on the bank of the Nile to meet him, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake. CEB 16 Say to him, The LORD, the Hebrews' God, has sent me to you with this message: Let my people go so that they can worship me in the desert. Up to now you still haven't listened. NIV 16 Then say to him, 'The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship me in the desert. But until now you have not listened. CEB 17 This is what the LORD says: By this you will know that I am the LORD. I'm now going to hit the water of the Nile River with this rod in my hand, and it will turn into blood. NIV 17 This is what the LORD says: By this you will know that I am the LORD: With the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood. CEB 18 The fish in the Nile are going to die, the Nile will stink, and the Egyptians won't be able to drink water from the Nile." NIV 18 The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink; the Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.' " CEB 19 The LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, ‘Take your shepherd's rod and stretch out your hand over Egypt's waters—over their rivers, their canals, their marshes, and all their bodies of water—so that they turn into blood. There will be blood all over the land of Egypt, even in wooden and stone containers.'" NIV 19 The LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt--over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs'--and they will turn to blood. Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in the wooden buckets and stone jars." CEB 20 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD commanded. He raised the shepherd's rod and hit the water in the Nile in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and all the water in the Nile turned into blood. NIV 20 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded. He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was changed into blood. CEB 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the Nile began to stink so that the Egyptians couldn't drink water from the Nile. There was blood all over the land of Egypt. NIV 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt. CEB 22 But the Egyptian religious experts did the same thing with their secret knowledge. As a result, Pharaoh remained stubborn, and he wouldn't listen to them, just as the LORD had said. NIV 22 But the Egyptian magicians did the same things by their secret arts, and Pharaoh's heart became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said. CEB 23 Pharaoh turned and went back to his palace. He wasn't impressed even by this. NIV 23 Instead, he turned and went into his palace, and did not take even this to heart. CEB 24 Meanwhile, all the Egyptians had to dig for drinking water along the banks of the Nile River, because they couldn't drink the water of the Nile itself. NIV 24 And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile to get drinking water, because they could not drink the water of the river. CEB 25 Seven days went by after the LORD had struck the Nile River. NIV 25 Seven days passed after the LORD struck the Nile.
