Ezekiel 1

WBT 1 Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth [month], in the fifth [day] of the month, as I [was] among the captives by the river of Kebar, [that] the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. NIV 1 In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God. WBT 2 In the fifth [day] of the month, which [was] the fifth year of king Jehoiachin's captivity, NIV 2 On the fifth of the month--it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin-- WBT 3 The word of the LORD came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Kebar; and the hand of the LORD was there upon him. NIV 3 the word of the LORD came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians. There the hand of the LORD was upon him. WBT 4 And I looked, and behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness [was] about it, and from the midst of it as the color of amber, from the midst of the fire. NIV 4 I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north--an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal, WBT 5 Also from the midst of it [came] the likeness of four living creatures. And this [was] their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. NIV 5 and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was that of a man, WBT 6 And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. NIV 6 but each of them had four faces and four wings. WBT 7 And their feet [were] straight feet; and the sole of their feet [was] like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the color of burnished brass. NIV 7 Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze. WBT 8 And [they had] the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings. NIV 8 Under their wings on their four sides they had the hands of a man. All four of them had faces and wings, WBT 9 Their wings [were] joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. NIV 9 and their wings touched one another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved. WBT 10 As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. NIV 10 Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a man, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle. WBT 11 Thus [were] their faces: and their wings [were] stretched upward; two [wings] of every one [were] joined one to another, and two covered their bodies. NIV 11 Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out upward; each had two wings, one touching the wing of another creature on either side, and two wings covering its body. WBT 12 And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; [and] they turned not when they went. NIV 12 Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went. WBT 13 As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance [was] like burning coals of fire, [and] like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. NIV 13 The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning flashed out of it. WBT 14 And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning. NIV 14 The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning. WBT 15 Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces. NIV 15 As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. WBT 16 The appearance of the wheels and their work [was] like the color of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work [was] as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel. NIV 16 This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like chrysolite, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. WBT 17 When they went, they went upon their four sides: [and] they returned not when they went. NIV 17 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not turn about as the creatures went. WBT 18 As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings [were] full of eyes around them four. NIV 18 Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around. WBT 19 And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. NIV 19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. WBT 20 Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither [was their] spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature [was] in the wheels. NIV 20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. WBT 21 When those went, [these] went; and when those stood, [these] stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature [was] in the wheels. NIV 21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. WBT 22 And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature [was] as the color of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above. NIV 22 Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was what looked like an expanse, sparkling like ice, and awesome. WBT 23 And under the firmament [were] their wings straight, the one towards the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies. NIV 23 Under the expanse their wings were stretched out one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body. WBT 24 And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of a host: when they stood, they let down their wings. NIV 24 When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing waters, like the voice of the Almighty, like the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings. WBT 25 And there was a voice from the firmament that [was] over their heads, when they stood, [and] had let down their wings. NIV 25 Then there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads as they stood with lowered wings. WBT 26 And above the firmament that [was] over their heads [was] the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne [was] the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. NIV 26 Above the expanse over their heads was what looked like a throne of sapphire, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. WBT 27 And I saw as the color of amber, as the appearance of fire around within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness on all sides. NIV 27 I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him. WBT 28 As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so [was] the appearance of the brightness around. This [was] the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw [it], I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one speaking. NIV 28 Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking.
