Ezekiel 18:1-6

NRS 1 The word of the Lord came to me: NIV 1 The word of the LORD came to me: NRS 2 What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, "The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge"? NIV 2 "What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: " 'The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'? NRS 3 As I live, says the Lord God, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. NIV 3 "As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel. NRS 4 Know that all lives are mine; the life of the parent as well as the life of the child is mine: it is only the person who sins that shall die. NIV 4 For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son--both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die. NRS 5 If a man is righteous and does what is lawful and right— NIV 5 "Suppose there is a righteous man who does what is just and right. NRS 6 if he does not eat upon the mountains or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor's wife or approach a woman during her menstrual period, NIV 6 He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of the house of Israel.
