Ezekiel 33:1-20

NLT 1 Once again a message came to me from the LORD : NIV 1 The word of the LORD came to me: NLT 2 “Son of man, give your people this message: ‘When I bring an army against a country, the people of that land choose one of their own to be a watchman. NIV 2 "Son of man, speak to your countrymen and say to them: 'When I bring the sword against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman, NLT 3 When the watchman sees the enemy coming, he sounds the alarm to warn the people. NIV 3 and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet to warn the people, NLT 4 Then if those who hear the alarm refuse to take action, it is their own fault if they die. NIV 4 then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not take warning and the sword comes and takes his life, his blood will be on his own head. NLT 5 They heard the alarm but ignored it, so the responsibility is theirs. If they had listened to the warning, they could have saved their lives. NIV 5 Since he heard the sound of the trumpet but did not take warning, his blood will be on his own head. If he had taken warning, he would have saved himself. NLT 6 But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and doesn’t sound the alarm to warn the people, he is responsible for their captivity. They will die in their sins, but I will hold the watchman responsible for their deaths.’ NIV 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.' NLT 7 “Now, son of man, I am making you a watchman for the people of Israel. Therefore, listen to what I say and warn them for me. NIV 7 "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. NLT 8 If I announce that some wicked people are sure to die and you fail to tell them to change their ways, then they will die in their sins, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths. NIV 8 When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you will surely die,' and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. NLT 9 But if you warn them to repent and they don’t repent, they will die in their sins, but you will have saved yourself. NIV 9 But if you do warn the wicked man to turn from his ways and he does not do so, he will die for his sin, but you will have saved yourself. NLT 10 “Son of man, give the people of Israel this message: You are saying, ‘Our sins are heavy upon us; we are wasting away! How can we survive?’ NIV 10 "Son of man, say to the house of Israel, 'This is what you are saying: "Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away because of them. How then can we live?" ' NLT 11 As surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD , I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live. Turn! Turn from your wickedness, O people of Israel! Why should you die? NIV 11 Say to them, 'As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, O house of Israel?' NLT 12 “Son of man, give your people this message: The righteous behavior of righteous people will not save them if they turn to sin, nor will the wicked behavior of wicked people destroy them if they repent and turn from their sins. NIV 12 "Therefore, son of man, say to your countrymen, 'The righteousness of the righteous man will not save him when he disobeys, and the wickedness of the wicked man will not cause him to fall when he turns from it. The righteous man, if he sins, will not be allowed to live because of his former righteousness.' NLT 13 When I tell righteous people that they will live, but then they sin, expecting their past righteousness to save them, then none of their righteous acts will be remembered. I will destroy them for their sins. NIV 13 If I tell the righteous man that he will surely live, but then he trusts in his righteousness and does evil, none of the righteous things he has done will be remembered; he will die for the evil he has done. NLT 14 And suppose I tell some wicked people that they will surely die, but then they turn from their sins and do what is just and right. NIV 14 And if I say to the wicked man, 'You will surely die,' but he then turns away from his sin and does what is just and right-- NLT 15 For instance, they might give back a debtor’s security, return what they have stolen, and obey my life-giving laws, no longer doing what is evil. If they do this, then they will surely live and not die. NIV 15 if he gives back what he took in pledge for a loan, returns what he has stolen, follows the decrees that give life, and does no evil, he will surely live; he will not die. NLT 16 None of their past sins will be brought up again, for they have done what is just and right, and they will surely live. NIV 16 None of the sins he has committed will be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he will surely live. NLT 17 “Your people are saying, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right,’ but it is they who are not doing what’s right. NIV 17 "Yet your countrymen say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' But it is their way that is not just. NLT 18 For again I say, when righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and turn to evil, they will die. NIV 18 If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does evil, he will die for it. NLT 19 But if wicked people turn from their wickedness and do what is just and right, they will live. NIV 19 And if a wicked man turns away from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he will live by doing so. NLT 20 O people of Israel, you are saying, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right.’ But I judge each of you according to your deeds.” NIV 20 Yet, O house of Israel, you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' But I will judge each of you according to his own ways."
