Galatians 4

BBE 1 But I say that as long as the son is a child, he is in no way different from a servant, though he is lord of all; NIV 1 What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. BBE 2 But is under keepers and managers till the time fixed by the father. NIV 2 He is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. BBE 3 So we, when we were young, were kept under the first rules of the world; NIV 3 So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world. BBE 4 But when the time had come, God sent out his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, NIV 4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, BBE 5 That he might make them free who were under the law, and that we might be given the place of sons. NIV 5 to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. BBE 6 And because you are sons, God has sent out the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, saying, Abba, Father. NIV 6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ""Abba", Father." BBE 7 So that you are no longer a servant, but a son; and if a son, then the heritage of God is yours. NIV 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir. BBE 8 But at that time, having no knowledge of God, you were servants to those who by right are no gods: NIV 8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. BBE 9 But now that you have come to have knowledge of God, or more truly, God has knowledge of you, how is it that you go back again to the poor and feeble first things, desiring to be servants to them again? NIV 9 But now that you know God--or rather are known by God--how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? BBE 10 You keep days, and months, and fixed times, and years. NIV 10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! BBE 11 I am in fear of you, that I may have been working for you to no purpose. NIV 11 I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you. BBE 12 My desire for you, brothers, is that you may be as I am, because I am as you are. You have done me no wrong; NIV 12 I plead with you, brothers, become like me, for I became like you. You have done me no wrong. BBE 13 But you have knowledge that with a feeble body I was preaching the good news to you the first time; NIV 13 As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you. BBE 14 And you did not have a poor opinion of me because of the trouble in my flesh, or put shame on it; but you took me to your hearts as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. NIV 14 Even though my illness was a trial to you, you did not treat me with contempt or scorn. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself. BBE 15 Where then is that happy condition of yours? because I give you witness, that, if possible, you would have taken out your eyes and given them to me. NIV 15 What has happened to all your joy? I can testify that, if you could have done so, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. BBE 16 So then am I no longer your friend, because I give you true words? NIV 16 Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth? BBE 17 Their interest in you is not good; but their desire is that you may be shut out, so that you may go after them. NIV 17 Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you [from us], so that you may be zealous for them. BBE 18 But it is good to have an interest in a good cause at all times, and not only when I am present with you. NIV 18 It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always and not just when I am with you. BBE 19 My children, of whom I am again in birth-pains till Christ is formed in you, NIV 19 My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you, BBE 20 Truly my desire is to be present with you now, using a changed voice; for I am troubled about you. NIV 20 how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am perplexed about you! BBE 21 Say, you whose desire it is to be under the law, do you not give ear to the law? NIV 21 Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says? BBE 22 Because it is in the Writings, that Abraham had two sons, one by the servant-woman, and one by the free woman. NIV 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman. BBE 23 Now the son by the servant-woman has his birth after the flesh; but the son by the free woman has his birth through the undertaking of God. NIV 23 His son by the slave woman was born in the ordinary way; but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a promise. BBE 24 Which things have a secret sense; because these women are the two agreements; one from the mountain of Sinai, giving birth to servants, which is Hagar. NIV 24 These things may be taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. BBE 25 Now this Hagar is the mountain Sinai in Arabia, and is the image of the Jerusalem which now is: which is a servant with her children. NIV 25 Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. BBE 26 But the Jerusalem on high is free, which is our mother. NIV 26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. BBE 27 For it is in the Writings, You who have never given birth, be glad; give cries of joy, you who have had no birth-pains; for the children of her who has been given up by her husband are more than those of the woman who has a husband. NIV 27 For it is written: "Be glad, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud, you who have no labor pains; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband." BBE 28 Now we, brothers, as Isaac was, are the children of the undertaking of God. NIV 28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. BBE 29 But as in those days he who had birth after the flesh was cruel to him who had birth after the Spirit, even so it is now. NIV 29 At that time the son born in the ordinary way persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now. BBE 30 What then do the Writings say? Send away the servant-woman and her son; for the son of the servant-woman will not have a part in the heritage with the son of the free woman. NIV 30 But what does the Scripture say? "Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman's son." BBE 31 So, brothers, we are not children of the servant-woman, but of the free woman. NIV 31 Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.
