Genesis 1

NCV 1 In the beginning God created the sky and the earth. NIV 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. NCV 2 The earth was empty and had no form. Darkness covered the ocean, and God's Spirit was moving over the water. NIV 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. NCV 3 Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. NIV 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. NCV 4 God saw that the light was good, so he divided the light from the darkness. NIV 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. NCV 5 God named the light "day" and the darkness "night." Evening passed, and morning came. This was the first day. NIV 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning--the first day. NCV 6 Then God said, "Let there be something to divide the water in two." NIV 6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." NCV 7 So God made the air and placed some of the water above the air and some below it. NIV 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. NCV 8 God named the air "sky." Evening passed, and morning came. This was the second day. NIV 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning--the second day. NCV 9 Then God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered together so the dry land will appear." And it happened. NIV 9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. NCV 10 God named the dry land "earth" and the water that was gathered together "seas." God saw that this was good. NIV 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good. NCV 11 Then God said, "Let the earth produce plants -- some to make grain for seeds and others to make fruits with seeds in them. Every seed will produce more of its own kind of plant." And it happened. NIV 11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. NCV 12 The earth produced plants with grain for seeds and trees that made fruits with seeds in them. Each seed grew its own kind of plant. God saw that all this was good. NIV 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. NCV 13 Evening passed, and morning came. This was the third day. NIV 13 And there was evening, and there was morning--the third day. NCV 14 Then God said, "Let there be lights in the sky to separate day from night. These lights will be used for signs, seasons, days, and years. NIV 14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, NCV 15 They will be in the sky to give light to the earth." And it happened. NIV 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. NCV 16 So God made the two large lights. He made the brighter light to rule the day and made the smaller light to rule the night. He also made the stars. NIV 16 God made two great lights--the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. NCV 17 God put all these in the sky to shine on the earth, NIV 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, NCV 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. God saw that all these things were good. NIV 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. NCV 19 Evening passed, and morning came. This was the fourth day. NIV 19 And there was evening, and there was morning--the fourth day. NCV 20 Then God said, "Let the water be filled with living things, and let birds fly in the air above the earth." NIV 20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." NCV 21 So God created the large sea animals and every living thing that moves in the sea. The sea is filled with these living things, with each one producing more of its own kind. He also made every bird that flies, and each bird produced more of its own kind. God saw that this was good. NIV 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. NCV 22 God blessed them and said, "Have many young ones so that you may grow in number. Fill the water of the seas, and let the birds grow in number on the earth." NIV 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." NCV 23 Evening passed, and morning came. This was the fifth day. NIV 23 And there was evening, and there was morning--the fifth day. NCV 24 Then God said, "Let the earth be filled with animals, each producing more of its own kind. Let there be tame animals and small crawling animals and wild animals, and let each produce more of its kind." And it happened. NIV 24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. NCV 25 So God made the wild animals, the tame animals, and all the small crawling animals to produce more of their own kind. God saw that this was good. NIV 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. NCV 26 Then God said, "Let us make human beings in our image and likeness. And let them rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the tame animals, over all the earth, and over all the small crawling animals on the earth." NIV 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." NCV 27 So God created human beings in his image. In the image of God he created them. He created them male and female. NIV 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. NCV 28 God blessed them and said, "Have many children and grow in number. Fill the earth and be its master. Rule over the fish in the sea and over the birds in the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth." NIV 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." NCV 29 God said, "Look, I have given you all the plants that have grain for seeds and all the trees whose fruits have seeds in them. They will be food for you. NIV 29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. NCV 30 I have given all the green plants as food for every wild animal, every bird of the air, and every small crawling animal." And it happened. NIV 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground--everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food." And it was so. NCV 31 God looked at everything he had made, and it was very good. Evening passed, and morning came. This was the sixth day. NIV 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the sixth day.
