Genesis 15

HNV 1 After these things the word of the LORD came to Avram in a vision, saying, "Don't be afraid, Avram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward." NIV 1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward." HNV 2 Avram said, "Lord GOD, what will you give me, seeing I go childless, and he who will inherit my estate is Eli`ezer of Dammesek?" NIV 2 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" HNV 3 Avram said, "Behold, to me you have given no seed: and, behold, one born in my house is my heir." NIV 3 And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir." HNV 4 Behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "This man will not be your heir, but he who will come forth out of your own body will be your heir." NIV 4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir." HNV 5 The LORD brought him outside, and said, "Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them." He said to Avram, "So shall your seed be." NIV 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." HNV 6 He believed in the LORD; and he reckoned it to him for righteousness. NIV 6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness. HNV 7 He said to him, "I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Kasdim, to give you this land to inherit it." NIV 7 He also said to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it." HNV 8 He said, "Lord GOD, whereby will I know that I will inherit it?" NIV 8 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?" HNV 9 He said to him, "Take me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtle-dove, and a young pigeon." NIV 9 So the LORD said to him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon." HNV 10 He took him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each half opposite the other; but he didn't divide the birds. NIV 10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. HNV 11 The birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Avram drove them away. NIV 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away. HNV 12 When the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Avram. Now terror and great darkness fell on him. NIV 12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. HNV 13 He said to Avram, "Know for sure that your seed will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them. They will afflict them four hundred years. NIV 13 Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. HNV 14 I will also judge that nation, whom they will serve. Afterward they will come out with great substance. NIV 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. HNV 15 But you will go to your fathers in shalom. You will be buried in a good old age. NIV 15 You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age. HNV 16 In the fourth generation they will come here again, for the iniquity of the Amori is not yet full." NIV 16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure." HNV 17 It came to pass that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. NIV 17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. HNV 18 In that day the LORD made a covenant with Avram, saying, "To your seed have I given this land, from the river of Mitzrayim to the great river, the river Perat: NIV 18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates-- HNV 19 the Kinim, the Kenizzi, the Kadmoni, NIV 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, HNV 20 the Hitti, the Perizzi, the Refa'im, NIV 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, HNV 21 the Amori, the Kana`anim, the Girgashi, and the Yevusi."
