Genesis 2

CJB 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, along with everything in them. NIV 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. CJB 2 On the seventh day God was finished with his work which he had made, so he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. NIV 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. CJB 3 God blessed the seventh day and separated it as holy; because on that day God rested from all his work which he had created, so that it itself could produce. NIV 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. CJB 4 Here is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created. On the day when ADONAI, God, made earth and heaven, NIV 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens-- CJB 5 there was as yet no wild bush on the earth, and no wild plant had as yet sprung up; for ADONAI, God, had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no one to cultivate the ground. NIV 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, CJB 6 Rather, a mist went up from the earth which watered the entire surface of the ground. NIV 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground-- CJB 7 Then ADONAI, God, formed a person [Hebrew: adam] from the dust of the ground [Hebrew: adamah] and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, so that he became a living being. NIV 7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. CJB 8 ADONAI, God, planted a garden toward the east, in 'Eden, and there he put the person whom he had formed. NIV 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. CJB 9 Out of the ground ADONAI, God, caused to grow every tree pleasing in appearance and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. NIV 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. CJB 10 A river went out of 'Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided into four streams. NIV 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. CJB 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it winds throughout the land of Havilah, where there is gold. NIV 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. CJB 12 The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx stone are also found there. NIV 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) CJB 13 The name of the second river is Gichon; it winds throughout the land of Kush. NIV 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. CJB 14 The name of the third river is Tigris; it is the one that flows toward the east of Ashur. The fourth river is the Euphrates. NIV 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. CJB 15 ADONAI, God, took the person and put him in the garden of 'Eden to cultivate and care for it. NIV 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. CJB 16 ADONAI, God, gave the person this order: "You may freely eat from every tree in the garden NIV 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; CJB 17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. You are not to eat from it, because on the day that you eat from it, it will become certain that you will die." NIV 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." CJB 18 ADONAI, God, said, "It isn't good that the person should be alone. I will make for him a companion suitable for helping him." NIV 18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." CJB 19 So from the ground ADONAI, God, formed every wild animal and every bird that flies in the air, and he brought them to the person to see what he would call them. Whatever the person would call each living creature, that was to be its name. NIV 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. CJB 20 So the person gave names to all the livestock, to the birds in the air and to every wild animal. But for Adam there was not found a companion suitable for helping him. NIV 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. CJB 21 Then God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the person; and while he was sleeping, he took one of his ribs and closed up the place from which he took it with flesh. NIV 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. CJB 22 The rib which ADONAI, God, had taken from the person, he made a woman-person; and he brought her to the man-person. NIV 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. CJB 23 The man-person said, "At last! This is bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh. She is to be called Woman [Hebrew: ishah], because she was taken out of Man [Hebrew: ish]." NIV 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man." CJB 24 This is why a man is to leave his father and mother and stick with his wife, and they are to be one flesh. NIV 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. CJB 25 They were both naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed. NIV 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
