Genesis 22

DBY 1 And it came to pass after these things, that God tried Abraham, and said to him, Abraham! and he said, Here am I. NIV 1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. DBY 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only [son], whom thou lovest, Isaac, and get thee into the land of Moriah, and there offer him up for a burnt-offering on one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. NIV 2 Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." DBY 3 And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he clave the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up and went to the place that God had told him of. NIV 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. DBY 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. NIV 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. DBY 5 And Abraham said to his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. NIV 5 He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you." DBY 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering, and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and the knife, and they went both of them together. NIV 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, DBY 7 And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, My father! And he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the sheep for a burnt-offering? NIV 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" DBY 8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself with the sheep for a burnt-offering. And they went both of them together. NIV 8 Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together. DBY 9 And they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built the altar there, and piled the wood; and he bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. NIV 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. DBY 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand, and took the knife to slaughter his son. NIV 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. DBY 11 And the Angel of Jehovah called to him from the heavens, and said, Abraham, Abraham! And he said, Here am I. NIV 11 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. DBY 12 And he said, Stretch not out thy hand against the lad, neither do anything to him; for now I know that thou fearest God, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son], from me. NIV 12 "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son." DBY 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, behind was a ram caught in the thicket by its horns; and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt-offering instead of his son. NIV 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. DBY 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh; as it is said at the present day, On the mount of Jehovah will be provided. NIV 14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided." DBY 15 And the Angel of Jehovah called to Abraham from the heavens a second time, NIV 15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time DBY 16 and said, By myself I swear, saith Jehovah, that, because thou hast done this, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son], NIV 16 and said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, DBY 17 I will richly bless thee, and greatly multiply thy seed, as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is on the sea-shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; NIV 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, DBY 18 and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth bless themselves, because thou hast hearkened to my voice. NIV 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me." DBY 19 And Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beer-sheba. And Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba. NIV 19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba. DBY 20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she also has borne sons to thy brother Nahor: NIV 20 Some time later Abraham was told, "Milcah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor: DBY 21 Uz his first-born, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, NIV 21 Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram), DBY 22 and Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel. NIV 22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel." DBY 23 (And Bethuel begot Rebecca.) These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother. NIV 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Abraham's brother Nahor. DBY 24 And his concubine, named Reumah, she also bore Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maacah. NIV 24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maacah.
