1 And it came to pass after these things, that God tested Abraham and said unto him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Behold, here I am."
1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
2 And He said, "Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of."
2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he cleaved the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up and went unto the place of which God had told him.
3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, "Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you."
5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand and a knife, and they went both of them together.
6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,
7 And Isaac spoke unto Abraham his father and said, "My father!" And he said, "Here am I, my son." And he said, "Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?"
7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
8 And Abraham said, "My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering." So they went both of them together.
8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here am I."
11 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
12 And He said, "Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him; for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from Me."
12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked; and behold, behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh [that is, The LORD will provide]; as it is said to this day, "In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen."
14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”
15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time
15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time
16 and said, "By Myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son,
16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,
17 in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies.
17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,
18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed My voice."
18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”
19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.
19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, "Behold Milcah, she hath also borne children unto thy brother Nahor:
20 Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:
21 Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,
21 Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram),
22 and Chesed and Hazo, and Pildash and Jidlaph and Bethuel."
22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.”
23 And Bethuel begot Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.
24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bore also Tebah and Gaham, and Thahash and Maachah.
24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
