Genesis 28

WBT 1 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. NIV 1 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him and commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman. WBT 2 Arise, go to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother. NIV 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother's father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother. WBT 3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people; NIV 3 May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples. WBT 4 And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land in which thou art a stranger, which God gave to Abraham. NIV 4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, the land God gave to Abraham." WBT 5 And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padan-aram, to Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother. NIV 5 Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau. WBT 6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him, he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan; NIV 6 Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, "Do not marry a Canaanite woman," WBT 7 And that Jacob obeyed his father, and his mother, and was gone to Padan-aram; NIV 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. WBT 8 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father; NIV 8 Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac; WBT 9 Then went Esau to Ishmael, and took to the wives which he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife. NIV 9 so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had. WBT 10 And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went towards Haran. NIV 10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran. WBT 11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set: and he took of the stones of that place, and put [them for] his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. NIV 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. WBT 12 And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder set upon the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold, the angels of God ascending and descending on it. NIV 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. WBT 13 And behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I [am] the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land on which thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed. NIV 13 There above it stood the LORD, and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. WBT 14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth; and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. NIV 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. WBT 15 And behold, I [am] with thee, and will keep thee in all [places] whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land: for I will not leave thee, until I have done [that] which I have declared to thee. NIV 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." WBT 16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew [it] not. NIV 16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it." WBT 17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful [is] this place! this [is] no other but the house of God, and this [is] the gate of heaven. NIV 17 He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven." WBT 18 And Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put [for] his pillows, and set it up [for] a pillar, and poured oil on the top of it. NIV 18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. WBT 19 And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city [was called] Luz at the first. NIV 19 He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz. WBT 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, NIV 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear WBT 21 So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God: NIV 21 so that I return safely to my father's house, then the LORD will be my God WBT 22 And this stone, which I have set [for] a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me, I will surely give the tenth to thee. NIV 22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."
