Genesis 2:4-25

KJV 4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created , in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, NIV 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens-- KJV 5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew : for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. NIV 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, KJV 6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. NIV 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground-- KJV 7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. NIV 7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. KJV 8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed . NIV 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. KJV 9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. NIV 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. KJV 10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted , and became into four heads. NIV 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. KJV 11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; NIV 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. KJV 12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. NIV 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) KJV 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. NIV 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. KJV 14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates. NIV 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. KJV 15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. NIV 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. KJV 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying , Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat : NIV 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; KJV 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die . NIV 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." KJV 18 And the LORD God said , It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. NIV 18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." KJV 19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. NIV 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. KJV 20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. NIV 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. KJV 21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept : and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; NIV 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. KJV 22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. NIV 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. KJV 23 And Adam said , This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. NIV 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man." KJV 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. NIV 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. KJV 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed . NIV 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
