Genesis 39

GNT 1 Now the Ishmaelites had taken Joseph to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, one of the king's officers, who was the captain of the palace guard. NIV 1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. GNT 2 The Lord was with Joseph and made him successful. He lived in the house of his Egyptian master, NIV 2 The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. GNT 3 who saw that the Lord was with Joseph and had made him successful in everything he did. NIV 3 When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, GNT 4 Potiphar was pleased with him and made him his personal servant; so he put him in charge of his house and everything he owned. NIV 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. GNT 5 From then on, because of Joseph the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian and everything that he had in his house and in his fields. NIV 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. GNT 6 Potiphar turned over everything he had to the care of Joseph and did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Joseph was well-built and good-looking, NIV 6 So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, GNT 7 and after a while his master's wife began to desire Joseph and asked him to go to bed with her. NIV 7 and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!" GNT 8 He refused and said to her, "Look, my master does not have to concern himself with anything in the house, because I am here. He has put me in charge of everything he has. NIV 8 But he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. GNT 9 I have as much authority in this house as he has, and he has not kept back anything from me except you. How then could I do such an immoral thing and sin against God?" NIV 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" GNT 10 Although she asked Joseph day after day, he would not go to bed with her. NIV 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her. GNT 11 But one day when Joseph went into the house to do his work, none of the house servants was there. NIV 11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. GNT 12 She caught him by his robe and said, "Come to bed with me." But he escaped and ran outside, leaving his robe in her hand. NIV 12 She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house. GNT 13 When she saw that he had left his robe and had run out of the house, NIV 13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, GNT 14 she called to her house servants and said, "Look at this! This Hebrew that my husband brought to the house is insulting us. He came into my room and tried to rape me, but I screamed as loud as I could. NIV 14 she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. GNT 15 When he heard me scream, he ran outside, leaving his robe beside me." NIV 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house." GNT 16 She kept his robe with her until Joseph's master came home. NIV 16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. GNT 17 Then she told him the same story: "That Hebrew slave that you brought here came into my room and insulted me. NIV 17 Then she told him this story: "That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. GNT 18 But when I screamed, he ran outside, leaving his robe beside me." NIV 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house." GNT 19 Joseph's master was furious NIV 19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, "This is how your slave treated me," he burned with anger. GNT 20 and had Joseph arrested and put in the prison where the king's prisoners were kept, and there he stayed. NIV 20 Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, GNT 21 But the Lord was with Joseph and blessed him, so that the jailer was pleased with him. NIV 21 the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. GNT 22 He put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and made him responsible for everything that was done in the prison. NIV 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. GNT 23 The jailer did not have to look after anything for which Joseph was responsible, because the Lord was with Joseph and made him succeed in everything he did. NIV 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
