Genesis 4

MSG 1 Adam slept with Eve his wife. She conceived and had Cain. She said, "I've gotten a man, with God's help!" NIV 1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man." MSG 2 Then she had another baby, Abel. Abel was a herdsman and Cain a farmer. NIV 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. MSG 3 Time passed. Cain brought an offering to God from the produce of his farm. NIV 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. MSG 4 Abel also brought an offering, but from the firstborn animals of his herd, choice cuts of meat. God liked Abel and his offering, NIV 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, MSG 5 but Cain and his offering didn't get his approval. Cain lost his temper and went into a sulk. NIV 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. MSG 6 God spoke to Cain: "Why this tantrum? Why the sulking? NIV 6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? MSG 7 If you do well, won't you be accepted? And if you don't do well, sin is lying in wait for you, ready to pounce; it's out to get you, you've got to master it." NIV 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it." MSG 8 Cain had words with his brother. They were out in the field; Cain came at Abel his brother and killed him. NIV 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. MSG 9 God said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "How should I know? Am I his babysitter?" NIV 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?" MSG 10 God said, "What have you done! The voice of your brother's blood is calling to me from the ground. NIV 10 The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground. MSG 11 From now on you'll get nothing but curses from this ground; you'll be driven from this ground that has opened its arms to receive the blood of your murdered brother. NIV 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. MSG 12 You'll farm this ground, but it will no longer give you its best. You'll be a homeless wanderer on Earth." NIV 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth." MSG 13 Cain said to God, "My punishment is too much. I can't take it! NIV 13 Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can bear. MSG 14 You've thrown me off the land and I can never again face you. I'm a homeless wanderer on Earth and whoever finds me will kill me." NIV 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." MSG 15 God told him, "No. Anyone who kills Cain will pay for it seven times over." God put a mark on Cain to protect him so that no one who met him would kill him. NIV 15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. MSG 16 Cain left the presence of God and lived in No-Man's-Land, east of Eden. NIV 16 So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. MSG 17 Cain slept with his wife. She conceived and had Enoch. He then built a city and named it after his son, Enoch. NIV 17 Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. MSG 18 Enoch had Irad, Irad had Mehujael, Mehujael had Methushael, Methushael had Lamech. NIV 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech. MSG 19 Lamech married two wives, Adah and Zillah. NIV 19 Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. MSG 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal, the ancestor of all who live in tents and herd cattle. NIV 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. MSG 21 His brother's name was Jubal, the ancestor of all who play the lyre and flute. NIV 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute. MSG 22 Zillah gave birth to Tubal-Cain, who worked at the forge making bronze and iron tools. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah. NIV 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah. MSG 23 Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, listen to me; you wives of Lamech, hear me out: I killed a man for wounding me, a young man who attacked me. NIV 23 Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me. MSG 24 If Cain is avenged seven times, for Lamech it's seventy-seven! NIV 24 If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times." MSG 25 Adam slept with his wife again. She had a son whom she named Seth. She said, "God has given me another child in place of Abel whom Cain killed." NIV 25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him." MSG 26 And then Seth had a son whom he named Enosh. That's when men and women began praying and worshiping in the name of God. NIV 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on the name of the LORD.
