1 And it came to pass after these things, <em>that</em> the butler of the king of Egypt and <em>his</em> baker had sinned against their lord, the king of Egypt.

Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt.
2 And Pharaoh was angry against his two officers, against the chief of the butlers and against the chief of the bakers.

Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,
3 And he put them in prison in the house of the captain of the guard, into the house of the prison where Joseph <em>was</em> bound.

and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined.
4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; and they continued for days in prison.

The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them. After they had been in custody for some time,
5 And both of them dreamed a dream, each man his dream in the same night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who <em>were</em> bound in the prison.

each of the two men—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison—had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.
6 And Joseph came in unto them in the morning and looked upon them, and, behold, they <em>were</em> sad.

When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected.
7 And he asked Pharaoh’s officers that <em>were</em> with him in the prison of his lord’s house, saying, Why look ye so sad today?

So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?”
8 And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and <em>there is</em> no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, <em>Do</em> not interpretations <em>belong</em> to God? Tell me <em>the dreams</em>, I pray you.

“We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.” Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”
9 Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine <em>was</em> before me,

So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, “In my dream I saw a vine in front of me,
10 and in the vine <em>were</em> three branches, and it <em>was</em> as though it budded <em>and</em> her blossoms shot forth, and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes;

and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes.
11 and Pharaoh’s cup <em>was</em> in my hand, and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.

Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup in his hand.”
12 And Joseph said unto him, This <em>is</em> the interpretation of it: The three branches <em>are</em> three days;

“This is what it means,” Joseph said to him. “The three branches are three days.
13 yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head and restore thee unto thy place, and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh’s cup into his hand after the former manner when thou wast his butler.

Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer.
14 Therefore thou shalt think of me within thyself when it shall be well with thee, and show mercy, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh and bring me out of this house;

But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison.
15 for indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews; neither have I done anything here that they should put me into the prison.

I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.”
16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also <em>was</em> in my dream, and, behold, <em>I had</em> three white baskets on my head;

When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread.
17 and in the uppermost basket <em>there was</em> of all manner of baked foods for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket upon my head.

In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”
18 Then Joseph answered and said, This <em>is</em> the interpretation thereof: The three baskets <em>are</em> three days.

“This is what it means,” Joseph said. “The three baskets are three days.
19 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee and shall hang thee on a tree, and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.

Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away your flesh.”
20 And it came to pass the third day, <em>which was</em> Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a banquet unto all his slaves, and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his slaves.

Now the third day was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials:
21 And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.

He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand—
22 But he hanged the chief baker; as Joseph had interpreted to them.

but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.
23 Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph but forgot him.

The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.
