Habakkuk 2

NRS 1 I will stand at my watchpost, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. NIV 1 I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint. NRS 2 Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. NIV 2 Then the LORD replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. NRS 3 For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. NIV 3 For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. NRS 4 Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith. NIV 4 "See, he is puffed up; his desires are not upright-- but the righteous will live by his faith-- NRS 5 Moreover, wealth is treacherous; the arrogant do not endure. They open their throats wide as Sheol; like Death they never have enough. They gather all nations for themselves, and collect all peoples as their own. NIV 5 indeed, wine betrays him; he is arrogant and never at rest. Because he is as greedy as the grave and like death is never satisfied, he gathers to himself all the nations and takes captive all the peoples. NRS 6 Shall not everyone taunt such people and, with mocking riddles, say about them, "Alas for you who heap up what is not your own!" How long will you load yourselves with goods taken in pledge? NIV 6 "Will not all of them taunt him with ridicule and scorn, saying, " 'Woe to him who piles up stolen goods and makes himself wealthy by extortion! How long must this go on?' NRS 7 Will not your own creditors suddenly rise, and those who make you tremble wake up? Then you will be booty for them. NIV 7 Will not your debtors suddenly arise? Will they not wake up and make you tremble? Then you will become their victim. NRS 8 Because you have plundered many nations, all that survive of the peoples shall plunder you— because of human bloodshed, and violence to the earth, to cities and all who live in them. NIV 8 Because you have plundered many nations, the peoples who are left will plunder you. For you have shed man's blood; you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them. NRS 9 "Alas for you who get evil gain for your houses, setting your nest on high to be safe from the reach of harm!" NIV 9 "Woe to him who builds his realm by unjust gain to set his nest on high, to escape the clutches of ruin! NRS 10 You have devised shame for your house by cutting off many peoples; you have forfeited your life. NIV 10 You have plotted the ruin of many peoples, shaming your own house and forfeiting your life. NRS 11 The very stones will cry out from the wall, and the plaster will respond from the woodwork. NIV 11 The stones of the wall will cry out, and the beams of the woodwork will echo it. NRS 12 "Alas for you who build a town by bloodshed, and found a city on iniquity!" NIV 12 "Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and establishes a town by crime! NRS 13 Is it not from the Lord of hosts that peoples labor only to feed the flames, and nations weary themselves for nothing? NIV 13 Has not the LORD Almighty determined that the people's labor is only fuel for the fire, that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing? NRS 14 But the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. NIV 14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. NRS 15 "Alas for you who make your neighbors drink, pouring out your wrath until they are drunk, in order to gaze on their nakedness!" NIV 15 "Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk, so that he can gaze on their naked bodies. NRS 16 You will be sated with contempt instead of glory. Drink, you yourself, and stagger! The cup in the Lord's right hand will come around to you, and shame will come upon your glory! NIV 16 You will be filled with shame instead of glory. Now it is your turn! Drink and be exposed ! The cup from the LORD's right hand is coming around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory. NRS 17 For the violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you; the destruction of the animals will terrify you— because of human bloodshed and violence to the earth, to cities and all who live in them. NIV 17 The violence you have done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, and your destruction of animals will terrify you. For you have shed man's blood; you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them. NRS 18 What use is an idol once its maker has shaped it— a cast image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in what has been made, though the product is only an idol that cannot speak! NIV 18 "Of what value is an idol, since a man has carved it? Or an image that teaches lies? For he who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak. NRS 19 Alas for you who say to the wood, "Wake up!" to silent stone, "Rouse yourself!" Can it teach? See, it is gold and silver plated, and there is no breath in it at all. NIV 19 Woe to him who says to wood, 'Come to life!' Or to lifeless stone, 'Wake up!' Can it give guidance? It is covered with gold and silver; there is no breath in it. NRS 20 But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him! NIV 20 But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him."
