Hosea 11:1-11

NRS 1 When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. NIV 1 "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. NRS 2 The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Baals, and offering incense to idols. NIV 2 But the more I called Israel, the further they went from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images. NRS 3 Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them. NIV 3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realize it was I who healed them. NRS 4 I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them. NIV 4 I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love; I lifted the yoke from their neck and bent down to feed them. NRS 5 They shall return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me. NIV 5 "Will they not return to Egypt and will not Assyria rule over them because they refuse to repent? NRS 6 The sword rages in their cities, it consumes their oracle-priests, and devours because of their schemes. NIV 6 Swords will flash in their cities, will destroy the bars of their gates and put an end to their plans. NRS 7 My people are bent on turning away from me. To the Most High they call, but he does not raise them up at all. NIV 7 My people are determined to turn from me. Even if they call to the Most High, he will by no means exalt them. NRS 8 How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender. NIV 8 "How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboiim? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused. NRS 9 I will not execute my fierce anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and no mortal, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath. NIV 9 I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I turn and devastate Ephraim. For I am God, and not man-- the Holy One among you. I will not come in wrath. NRS 10 They shall go after the Lord, who roars like a lion; when he roars, his children shall come trembling from the west. NIV 10 They will follow the LORD; he will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west. NRS 11 They shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria; and I will return them to their homes, says the Lord. NIV 11 They will come trembling like birds from Egypt, like doves from Assyria. I will settle them in their homes," declares the LORD.
