Isaiah 48

DBY 1 Hear ye this, house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, who swear by the name of Jehovah, and make mention of the God of Israel, not in truth, nor in righteousness. NIV 1 "Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths in the name of the LORD and invoke the God of Israel-- but not in truth or righteousness-- DBY 2 For they are named after the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel: Jehovah of hosts is his name. NIV 2 you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city and rely on the God of Israel-- the LORD Almighty is his name: DBY 3 I have declared the former things long ago; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I caused them to be heard: I wrought suddenly, and they came to pass. NIV 3 I foretold the former things long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them known; then suddenly I acted, and they came to pass. DBY 4 Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass, NIV 4 For I knew how stubborn you were; the sinews of your neck were iron, your forehead was bronze. DBY 5 so I have long ago declared [them] to thee; before they came to pass I caused thee to hear [them]; lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, or my molten image hath commanded them. NIV 5 Therefore I told you these things long ago; before they happened I announced them to you so that you could not say, 'My idols did them; my wooden image and metal god ordained them.' DBY 6 Thou heardest, see all this; -- and ye, will not ye declare [it]? I have caused thee to hear new things from this time, and things hidden, and that thou knewest not: NIV 6 You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not admit them? "From now on I will tell you of new things, of hidden things unknown to you. DBY 7 they are created now, and not long ago; and before this day thou hast not heard them, lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them. NIV 7 They are created now, and not long ago; you have not heard of them before today. So you cannot say, 'Yes, I knew of them.' DBY 8 Yea, thou heardest not, yea, thou knewest not, yea, from of old thine ear was not opened; for I knew that thou wouldest ever deal treacherously, and thou wast called a transgressor from the womb. NIV 8 You have neither heard nor understood; from of old your ear has not been open. Well do I know how treacherous you are; you were called a rebel from birth. DBY 9 For my name's sake I will defer mine anger, and [for] my praise will I refrain as to thee, that I cut thee not off. NIV 9 For my own name's sake I delay my wrath; for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you, so as not to cut you off. DBY 10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not as silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. NIV 10 See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. DBY 11 For mine own sake, for mine own sake, will I do [it]; for how should [my name] be profaned? and I will not give my glory unto another. NIV 11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this. How can I let myself be defamed? I will not yield my glory to another. DBY 12 Hearken unto me, Jacob, and [thou] Israel, my called. I [am] HE; I, the first, and I, the last. NIV 12 "Listen to me, O Jacob, Israel, whom I have called: I am he; I am the first and I am the last. DBY 13 Yea, my hand hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spread abroad the heavens: I call unto them, they stand up together. NIV 13 My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they all stand up together. DBY 14 All ye, gather yourselves together, and hear: which among them hath declared these things? He whom Jehovah hath loved shall execute his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm [shall be on] the Chaldeans. NIV 14 "Come together, all of you, and listen: Which of [the idols] has foretold these things? The LORD's chosen ally will carry out his purpose against Babylon; his arm will be against the Babylonians. DBY 15 I, [even] I, have spoken; yea, I have called him; I have brought him, and his way shall be prosperous. NIV 15 I, even I, have spoken; yes, I have called him. I will bring him, and he will succeed in his mission. DBY 16 Come near unto me, hear ye this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I; and now the Lord Jehovah hath sent me, and his Spirit. NIV 16 "Come near me and listen to this: "From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret; at the time it happens, I am there." And now the Sovereign LORD has sent me, with his Spirit. DBY 17 Thus saith Jehovah, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I [am] Jehovah thy God, who teacheth thee for [thy] profit, who leadeth thee in the way that thou shouldest go. NIV 17 This is what the LORD says-- your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. DBY 18 Oh that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! Then would thy peace have been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea; NIV 18 If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the sea. DBY 19 and thy seed would have been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof: their name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me. NIV 19 Your descendants would have been like the sand, your children like its numberless grains; their name would never be cut off nor destroyed from before me." DBY 20 Go ye forth from Babylon, flee from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing; declare, cause this to be heard, utter it to the end of the earth; say ye, Jehovah hath redeemed his servant Jacob. NIV 20 Leave Babylon, flee from the Babylonians! Announce this with shouts of joy and proclaim it. Send it out to the ends of the earth; say, "The LORD has redeemed his servant Jacob." DBY 21 And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts; he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them; yea, he clave the rock, and the waters gushed out. NIV 21 They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow for them from the rock; he split the rock and water gushed out. DBY 22 There is no peace, saith Jehovah, unto the wicked. NIV 22 "There is no peace," says the LORD, "for the wicked."
