NCV 1 The Lord says, "Family of Jacob, listen to me. You are called Israel, and you come from the family of Judah. and praise the God of Israel, but you are not honest or sincere. NIV 1 "Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths in the name of the LORD and invoke the God of Israel-- but not in truth or righteousness-- NCV 2 You call yourselves people of the holy city, and you depend on the God of Israel, who is named the Lord All-Powerful. NIV 2 you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city and rely on the God of Israel-- the LORD Almighty is his name: NCV 3 Long ago I told you what would happen. I said these things and made them known; suddenly I acted, and these things happened. NIV 3 I foretold the former things long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them known; then suddenly I acted, and they came to pass. NCV 4 I knew you were stubborn; your neck was like an iron muscle, and your head was like bronze. NIV 4 For I knew how stubborn you were; the sinews of your neck were iron, your forehead was bronze. NCV 5 So a long time ago I told you about these things; I told you about them before they happened so you couldn't say, 'My idols did this, and my wooden and metal statues made these things happen.' NIV 5 Therefore I told you these things long ago; before they happened I announced them to you so that you could not say, 'My idols did them; my wooden image and metal god ordained them.' NCV 6 "You heard and saw everything that happened, so you should tell this news to others. Now I will tell you about new things, hidden things that you don't know yet. NIV 6 You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not admit them? "From now on I will tell you of new things, of hidden things unknown to you. NCV 7 These things are happening now, not long ago; you have not heard about them before today. So you cannot say, 'We already knew about that.' NIV 7 They are created now, and not long ago; you have not heard of them before today. So you cannot say, 'Yes, I knew of them.' NCV 8 But you have not heard me; you have not understood. Even long ago you did not listen to me. I knew you would surely turn against me; you have fought against me since you were born. NIV 8 You have neither heard nor understood; from of old your ear has not been open. Well do I know how treacherous you are; you were called a rebel from birth. NCV 9 But for my own sake I will be patient. People will praise me for not becoming angry and destroying you. NIV 9 For my own name's sake I delay my wrath; for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you, so as not to cut you off. NCV 10 I have made you pure, but not by fire, as silver is made pure. I have purified you by giving you troubles. NIV 10 See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. NCV 11 I do this for myself, for my own sake. I will not let people speak evil against me, and I will not let some god take my glory. NIV 11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this. How can I let myself be defamed? I will not yield my glory to another. NCV 12 "People of Jacob, listen to me. People of Israel, I have called you to be my people. I am God; I am the beginning and the end. NIV 12 "Listen to me, O Jacob, Israel, whom I have called: I am he; I am the first and I am the last. NCV 13 I made the earth with my own hands. With my right hand I spread out the skies. When I call them, they come together before me." NIV 13 My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they all stand up together. NCV 14 All of you, come together and listen. None of the gods said these things would happen. to attack the Babylonians; he will carry out his wishes against Babylon. NIV 14 "Come together, all of you, and listen: Which of [the idols] has foretold these things? I have brought him, and I will make him successful. NIV 15 I, even I, have spoken; yes, I have called him. I will bring him, and he will succeed in his mission. NCV 16 Come to me and listen to this. From the beginning I have spoken openly. From the time it began, I was there." Now, the Lord God has sent me with his Spirit. NIV 16 "Come near me and listen to this: "From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret; at the time it happens, I am there." And now the Sovereign LORD has sent me, with his Spirit. NCV 17 This is what the Lord, who saves you, the Holy One of Israel, says: "I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to do what is good, who leads you in the way you should go. NIV 17 This is what the LORD says-- your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. NCV 18 If you had obeyed me, you would have had peace like a full-flowing river. Good things would have flowed to you like the waves of the sea. NIV 18 If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the sea.
