Isaiah 48

NLT 1 “Listen to me, O family of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and born into the family of Judah. Listen, you who take oaths in the name of the and call on the God of Israel. You don’t keep your promises, NIV 1 "Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths in the name of the LORD and invoke the God of Israel-- but not in truth or righteousness-- NLT 2 even though you call yourself the holy city and talk about depending on the God of Israel, whose name is the of Heaven’s Armies. NIV 2 you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city and rely on the God of Israel-- the LORD Almighty is his name: NLT 3 Long ago I told you what was going to happen. Then suddenly I took action, and all my predictions came true. NIV 3 I foretold the former things long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them known; then suddenly I acted, and they came to pass. NLT 4 For I know how stubborn and obstinate you are. Your necks are as unbending as iron. Your heads are as hard as bronze. NIV 4 For I knew how stubborn you were; the sinews of your neck were iron, your forehead was bronze. NLT 5 That is why I told you what would happen; I told you beforehand what I was going to do. Then you could never say, ‘My idols did it. My wooden image and metal god commanded it to happen!’ NIV 5 Therefore I told you these things long ago; before they happened I announced them to you so that you could not say, 'My idols did them; my wooden image and metal god ordained them.' NLT 6 You have heard my predictions and seen them fulfilled, but you refuse to admit it. Now I will tell you new things, secrets you have not yet heard. NIV 6 You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not admit them? "From now on I will tell you of new things, of hidden things unknown to you. NLT 7 They are brand new, not things from the past. So you cannot say, ‘We knew that all the time!’ NIV 7 They are created now, and not long ago; you have not heard of them before today. So you cannot say, 'Yes, I knew of them.' NLT 8 “Yes, I will tell you of things that are entirely new, things you never heard of before. For I know so well what traitors you are. You have been rebels from birth. NIV 8 You have neither heard nor understood; from of old your ear has not been open. Well do I know how treacherous you are; you were called a rebel from birth. NLT 9 Yet for my own sake and for the honor of my name, I will hold back my anger and not wipe you out. NIV 9 For my own name's sake I delay my wrath; for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you, so as not to cut you off. NLT 10 I have refined you, but not as silver is refined. Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering. NIV 10 See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. NLT 11 I will rescue you for my sake— yes, for my own sake! I will not let my reputation be tarnished, and I will not share my glory with idols! NIV 11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this. How can I let myself be defamed? I will not yield my glory to another. NLT 12 “Listen to me, O family of Jacob, Israel my chosen one! I alone am God, the First and the Last. NIV 12 "Listen to me, O Jacob, Israel, whom I have called: I am he; I am the first and I am the last. NLT 13 It was my hand that laid the foundations of the earth, my right hand that spread out the heavens above. When I call out the stars, they all appear in order.” NIV 13 My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they all stand up together. NLT 14 Have any of your idols ever told you this? Come, all of you, and listen: The has chosen Cyrus as his ally. He will use him to put an end to the empire of Babylon and to destroy the Babylonian armies. NIV 14 "Come together, all of you, and listen: Which of [the idols] has foretold these things? The LORD's chosen ally will carry out his purpose against Babylon; his arm will be against the Babylonians. NLT 15 “I have said it: I am calling Cyrus! I will send him on this errand and will help him succeed. NIV 15 I, even I, have spoken; yes, I have called him. I will bring him, and he will succeed in his mission. NLT 16 Come closer, and listen to this. From the beginning I have told you plainly what would happen.” And now the Sovereign and his Spirit have sent me with this message. NIV 16 "Come near me and listen to this: "From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret; at the time it happens, I am there." And now the Sovereign LORD has sent me, with his Spirit. NLT 17 This is what the says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow. NIV 17 This is what the LORD says-- your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. NLT 18 Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea. NIV 18 If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the sea. NLT 19 Your descendants would have been like the sands along the seashore— too many to count! There would have been no need for your destruction, or for cutting off your family name.” NIV 19 Your descendants would have been like the sand, your children like its numberless grains; their name would never be cut off nor destroyed from before me." NLT 20 Yet even now, be free from your captivity! Leave Babylon and the Babylonians. Sing out this message! Shout it to the ends of the earth! The has redeemed his servants, the people of Israel. NIV 20 Leave Babylon, flee from the Babylonians! Announce this with shouts of joy and proclaim it. Send it out to the ends of the earth; say, "The LORD has redeemed his servant Jacob." NLT 21 They were not thirsty when he led them through the desert. He divided the rock, and water gushed out for them to drink. NIV 21 They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow for them from the rock; he split the rock and water gushed out. NLT 22 “But there is no peace for the wicked,” says the . NIV 22 "There is no peace," says the LORD, "for the wicked."
