Isaiah 5

NAS 1 Let me sing now for my well-beloved A song of my beloved concerning His vineyard. My well-beloved had a vineyard on a fertile hill. NIV 1 I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. NAS 2 He dug it all around, removed its stones, And planted it with the choicest vine. And He built a tower in the middle of it And also hewed out a wine vat in it; Then He expected it to produce good grapes, But it produced only worthless ones. NIV 2 He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit. NAS 3 "And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, Judge between Me and My vineyard. NIV 3 "Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. NAS 4 "What more was there to do for My vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I expected it to produce good grapes did it produce worthless ones? NIV 4 What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad? NAS 5 "So now let Me tell you what I am going to do to My vineyard: I will remove its hedge and it will be consumed; I will break down its wall and it will become trampled ground. NIV 5 Now I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will be destroyed; I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled. NAS 6 "I will lay it waste; It will not be pruned or hoed, But briars and thorns will come up. I will also charge the clouds to rain no rain on it." NIV 6 I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it." NAS 7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel And the men of Judah His delightful plant. Thus He looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; For righteousness, but behold, a cry of distress. NIV 7 The vineyard of the LORD Almighty is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are the garden of his delight. And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard cries of distress. NAS 8 Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field, Until there is no more room, So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land! NIV 8 Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field till no space is left and you live alone in the land. NAS 9 In my ears the LORD of hosts has sworn, "Surely , many houses shall become desolate, Even great and fine ones, without occupants. NIV 9 The LORD Almighty has declared in my hearing: "Surely the great houses will become desolate, the fine mansions left without occupants. NAS 10 "For ten acres of vineyard will yield only one bath of wine, And a homer of seed will yield but an ephah of grain." NIV 10 A ten-acre vineyard will produce only a bath of wine, a homer of seed only an ephah of grain." NAS 11 Woe to those who rise early in the morning that they may pursue strong drink, Who stay up late in the evening that wine may inflame them! NIV 11 Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine. NAS 12 Their banquets are accompanied by lyre and harp, by tambourine and flute, and by wine; But they do not pay attention to the deeds of the LORD , Nor do they consider the work of His hands. NIV 12 They have harps and lyres at their banquets, tambourines and flutes and wine, but they have no regard for the deeds of the LORD, no respect for the work of his hands. NAS 13 Therefore My people go into exile for their lack of knowledge; And their honorable men are famished, And their multitude is parched with thirst. NIV 13 Therefore my people will go into exile for lack of understanding; their men of rank will die of hunger and their masses will be parched with thirst. NAS 14 Therefore Sheol has enlarged its throat and opened its mouth without measure; And Jerusalem's splendor, her multitude, her din of revelry and the jubilant within her, descend into it. NIV 14 Therefore the grave enlarges its appetite and opens its mouth without limit; into it will descend their nobles and masses with all their brawlers and revelers. NAS 15 So the common man will be humbled and the man of importance abased, The eyes of the proud also will be abased. NIV 15 So man will be brought low and mankind humbled, the eyes of the arrogant humbled. NAS 16 But the LORD of hosts will be exalted in judgment, And the holy God will show Himself holy in righteousness. NIV 16 But the LORD Almighty will be exalted by his justice, and the holy God will show himself holy by his righteousness. NAS 17 Then the lambs will graze as in their pasture, And strangers will eat in the waste places of the wealthy. NIV 17 Then sheep will graze as in their own pasture; lambs will feed among the ruins of the rich. NAS 18 Woe to those who drag iniquity with the cords of falsehood, And sin as if with cart ropes; NIV 18 Woe to those who draw sin along with cords of deceit, and wickedness as with cart ropes, NAS 19 Who say, "Let Him make speed, let Him hasten His work, that we may see it; And let the purpose of the Holy One of Israel draw near And come to pass, that we may know it!" NIV 19 to those who say, "Let God hurry, let him hasten his work so we may see it. Let it approach, let the plan of the Holy One of Israel come, so we may know it." NAS 20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! NIV 20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. NAS 21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes And clever in their own sight ! NIV 21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight. NAS 22 Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wine And valiant men in mixing strong drink, NIV 22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks, NAS 23 Who justify the wicked for a bribe, And take away the rights of the ones who are in the right! NIV 23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice to the innocent. NAS 24 Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes stubble And dry grass collapses into the flame, So their root will become like rot and their blossom blow away as dust; For they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts And despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. NIV 24 Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the LORD Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel. NAS 25 On this account the anger of the LORD has burned against His people, And He has stretched out His hand against them and struck them down. And the mountains quaked, and their corpses lay like refuse in the middle of the streets. For all this His anger is not spent, But His hand is still stretched out. NIV 25 Therefore the LORD's anger burns against his people; his hand is raised and he strikes them down. The mountains shake, and the dead bodies are like refuse in the streets. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. NAS 26 He will also lift up a standard to the distant nation, And will whistle for it from the ends of the earth; And behold, it will come with speed swiftly. NIV 26 He lifts up a banner for the distant nations, he whistles for those at the ends of the earth. Here they come, swiftly and speedily! NAS 27 No one in it is weary or stumbles, None slumbers or sleeps; Nor is the belt at its waist undone, Nor its sandal strap broken. NIV 27 Not one of them grows tired or stumbles, not one slumbers or sleeps; not a belt is loosened at the waist, not a sandal thong is broken. NAS 28 Its arrows are sharp and all its bows are bent; The hoofs of its horses seem like flint and its chariot wheels like a whirlwind. NIV 28 Their arrows are sharp, all their bows are strung; their horses' hoofs seem like flint, their chariot wheels like a whirlwind. NAS 29 Its roaring is like a lioness, and it roars like young lions; It growls as it seizes the prey And carries it off with no one to deliver it. NIV 29 Their roar is like that of the lion, they roar like young lions; they growl as they seize their prey and carry it off with no one to rescue. NAS 30 And it will growl over it in that day like the roaring of the sea. If one looks to the land, behold, there is darkness and distress; Even the light is darkened by its clouds. NIV 30 In that day they will roar over it like the roaring of the sea. And if one looks at the land, he will see darkness and distress; even the light will be darkened by the clouds.
