Isaiah 9

DBY 1 Nevertheless the darkness shall not be as when the distress was in the [land], at the time he at first lightly, and afterwards heavily, visited the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, -- the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations: NIV 1 Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan-- DBY 2 the people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them light hath shone. NIV 2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. DBY 3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, hast increased its joy: they joy before thee like to the joy in harvest; as [men] rejoice when they divide the spoil. NIV 3 You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder. DBY 4 For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian. NIV 4 For as in the day of Midian's defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. DBY 5 For every boot of him that is shod for the tumult, and the garment rolled in blood, shall be for burning, fuel for fire. NIV 5 Every warrior's boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. DBY 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name is called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace. NIV 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. DBY 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with judgment and with righteousness, from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this. NIV 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. DBY 8 The Lord sent a word unto Jacob, and it lighteth upon Israel. NIV 8 The Lord has sent a message against Jacob; it will fall on Israel. DBY 9 And all the people shall know [it], Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and stoutness of heart, NIV 9 All the people will know it-- Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria-- who say with pride and arrogance of heart, DBY 10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones; the sycamore trees are cut down, but we will replace them with cedars. NIV 10 "The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone; the fig trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars." DBY 11 And Jehovah will set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and arm his enemies, NIV 11 But the LORD has strengthened Rezin's foes against them and has spurred their enemies on. DBY 12 the Syrians on the east, and the Philistines on the west; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still. NIV 12 Arameans from the east and Philistines from the west have devoured Israel with open mouth. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. DBY 13 But the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, and they do not seek Jehovah of hosts. NIV 13 But the people have not returned to him who struck them, nor have they sought the LORD Almighty. DBY 14 And Jehovah will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm-branch and rush, in one day: NIV 14 So the LORD will cut off from Israel both head and tail, both palm branch and reed in a single day; DBY 15 the ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. NIV 15 the elders and prominent men are the head, the prophets who teach lies are the tail. DBY 16 For the guides of this people mislead [them]; and they that are guided by them are swallowed up. NIV 16 Those who guide this people mislead them, and those who are guided are led astray. DBY 17 Therefore the Lord will not rejoice in their young men, neither will he have mercy on their fatherless and on their widows; for every one is a hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still. NIV 17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men, nor will he pity the fatherless and widows, for everyone is ungodly and wicked, every mouth speaks vileness. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. DBY 18 For wickedness burneth as a fire: it devoureth briars and thorns, and kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they go rolling up like a pillar of smoke. NIV 18 Surely wickedness burns like a fire; it consumes briers and thorns, it sets the forest thickets ablaze, so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke. DBY 19 Through the wrath of Jehovah of hosts is the land burned up, and the people is as fuel for fire: a man spareth not his brother; NIV 19 By the wrath of the LORD Almighty the land will be scorched and the people will be fuel for the fire; no one will spare his brother. DBY 20 and he snatcheth on the right hand, and is hungry, and eateth on the left hand; and they are not satisfied. They eat every man the flesh of his own arm: NIV 20 On the right they will devour, but still be hungry; on the left they will eat, but not be satisfied. Each will feed on the flesh of his own offspring: DBY 21 Manasseh, Ephraim, and Ephraim, Manasseh; [and] they together are against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still. NIV 21 Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh; together they will turn against Judah. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.
