Jeremiah 13

NCV 1 This is what the Lord said to me: "Go and buy a linen belt and put it around your waist. Don't let the belt get wet." NIV 1 This is what the LORD said to me: "Go and buy a linen belt and put it around your waist, but do not let it touch water." NCV 2 So I bought a linen belt, just as the Lord told me, and put it around my waist. NIV 2 So I bought a belt, as the LORD directed, and put it around my waist. NCV 3 Then the Lord spoke his word to me a second time: NIV 3 Then the word of the LORD came to me a second time: NCV 4 "Take the belt you bought and are wearing, and go to Perath. Hide the belt there in a crack in the rocks." NIV 4 "Take the belt you bought and are wearing around your waist, and go now to Perath and hide it there in a crevice in the rocks." NCV 5 So I went to Perath and hid the belt there, just as the Lord told me. NIV 5 So I went and hid it at Perath, as the LORD told me. NCV 6 Many days later the Lord said to me, "Now go to Perath and get the belt I told you to hide there." NIV 6 Many days later the LORD said to me, "Go now to Perath and get the belt I told you to hide there." NCV 7 So I went to Perath and dug up the belt and took it from where I had hidden it. But now it was ruined; it was good for nothing. NIV 7 So I went to Perath and dug up the belt and took it from the place where I had hidden it, but now it was ruined and completely useless. NCV 8 Then the Lord spoke his word to me. NIV 8 Then the word of the LORD came to me: NCV 9 This is what the Lord said: "In the same way I will ruin the pride of the people of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem. NIV 9 "This is what the LORD says: 'In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem. NCV 10 These evil people refuse to listen to my warnings. They stubbornly do only what they want to do, and they follow other gods to serve and worship them. So they will become like this linen belt -- good for nothing. NIV 10 These wicked people, who refuse to listen to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts and go after other gods to serve and worship them, will be like this belt--completely useless! NCV 11 As a belt is wrapped tightly around a person's waist, I wrapped the families of Israel and Judah around me," says the Lord. "I did that so they would be my people and bring fame, praise, and honor to me. But my people would not listen. NIV 11 For as a belt is bound around a man's waist, so I bound the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to me,' declares the LORD, 'to be my people for my renown and praise and honor. But they have not listened.' NCV 12 "Say to them: 'This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: All leather bags for holding wine should be filled with wine.' People will say to you: 'Of course, we know all wine bags should be filled with wine.' NIV 12 "Say to them: 'This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Every wineskin should be filled with wine.' And if they say to you, 'Don't we know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?' NCV 13 Then you will say to them, 'This is what the Lord says: I will make everyone in this land like a drunken person -- the kings who sit on David's throne, the priests and the prophets, and all the people who live in Jerusalem. NIV 13 then tell them, 'This is what the LORD says: I am going to fill with drunkenness all who live in this land, including the kings who sit on David's throne, the priests, the prophets and all those living in Jerusalem. NCV 14 I will make them smash against one another, fathers and sons alike, says the Lord. I will not feel sorry or have pity on them or show mercy that would stop me from destroying them.'" NIV 14 I will smash them one against the other, fathers and sons alike, declares the LORD. I will allow no pity or mercy or compassion to keep me from destroying them.' " NCV 15 Listen and pay attention. Don't be too proud, because the Lord has spoken to you. NIV 15 Hear and pay attention, do not be arrogant, for the LORD has spoken. NCV 16 Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings darkness and before you slip and fall on the dark hills. You hope for light, but he will turn it into thick darkness; he will change it into deep gloom. NIV 16 Give glory to the LORD your God before he brings the darkness, before your feet stumble on the darkening hills. You hope for light, but he will turn it to thick darkness and change it to deep gloom. NCV 17 If you don't listen to him, I will cry secretly because of your pride. I will cry painfully, and my eyes will overflow with tears, because the Lord's people will be captured. NIV 17 But if you do not listen, I will weep in secret because of your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly, overflowing with tears, because the LORD's flock will be taken captive. NCV 18 Tell this to the king and the queen mother: "Come down from your thrones, because your beautiful crowns have fallen from your heads." NIV 18 Say to the king and to the queen mother, "Come down from your thrones, for your glorious crowns will fall from your heads." NCV 19 The cities of southern Judah are locked up, and no one can open them. foreign land; they will be carried away completely. NIV 19 The cities in the Negev will be shut up, and there will be no one to open them. All Judah will be carried into exile, carried completely away. NCV 20 Jerusalem, look up and see the people coming from the north. Where is the flock God gave you to care for, the flock you bragged about? NIV 20 Lift up your eyes and see those who are coming from the north. Where is the flock that was entrusted to you, the sheep of which you boasted? NCV 21 What will you say when they appoint as your heads those you had thought were your friends? Won't you have much pain and trouble, like a woman giving birth to a baby? NIV 21 What will you say when [the LORD] sets over you those you cultivated as your special allies? Will not pain grip you like that of a woman in labor? NCV 22 You might ask yourself, "Why has this happened to me?" It happened because of your many sins. Because of your sins, your skirt was torn off and your body has been treated badly. NIV 22 And if you ask yourself, "Why has this happened to me?"-- it is because of your many sins that your skirts have been torn off and your body mistreated. NCV 23 Can a person from Cush change the color of his skin? Can a leopard change his spots? In the same way, Jerusalem, you cannot change and do good, because you are accustomed to doing evil. NIV 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil. NCV 24 "I will scatter you like chaff that is blown away by the desert wind. NIV 24 "I will scatter you like chaff driven by the desert wind. NCV 25 This is what will happen to you; this is your part in my plans," says the Lord. "Because you forgot me and trusted in false gods, NIV 25 This is your lot, the portion I have decreed for you," declares the LORD, "because you have forgotten me and trusted in false gods. NCV 26 I will pull your skirts up over your face so everyone will see your shame. NIV 26 I will pull up your skirts over your face that your shame may be seen-- NCV 27 I have seen the terrible things you have done: your acts of adultery and your snorting, your prostitution, your hateful acts on the hills and in the fields. How terrible it will be for you, Jerusalem. How long will you continue being unclean?" NIV 27 your adulteries and lustful neighings, your shameless prostitution! I have seen your detestable acts on the hills and in the fields. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! How long will you be unclean?"
