CJB 1 The word of ADONAI came to me: NIV 1 The word of the LORD came to me: CJB 2 "Go and shout in the ears of Yerushalayim that this is what ADONAI says: 'I remember your devotion when you were young; how, as a bride, you loved me; how you followed me through the desert, through a land not sown. NIV 2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem: " 'I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the desert, through a land not sown. CJB 3 "'Isra'el is set aside for ADONAI, the firstfruits of his harvest; all who devour him will incur guilt; evil will befall them," says ADONAI. NIV 3 Israel was holy to the LORD, the firstfruits of his harvest; all who devoured her were held guilty, and disaster overtook them,' " declares the LORD. CJB 4 Hear the word of ADONAI, house of Ya'akov and all families in the house of Isra'el; NIV 4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, all you clans of the house of Israel. CJB 5 here is what ADONAI says: "What did your ancestors find wrong with me to make them go so far away from me, to make them go after nothings and become themselves nothings? NIV 5 This is what the LORD says: "What fault did your fathers find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves. CJB 6 They didn't ask, 'Where is ADONAI, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the desert, through a land of wastes and ravines, through a land of drought and death-dark shadows, through a land where no one travels and where no one ever lived?' NIV 6 They did not ask, 'Where is the LORD, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness, through a land of deserts and rifts, a land of drought and darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives?' CJB 7 I brought you into a fertile land to enjoy its fruit and all its good things; but when you entered, you defiled my land and made my heritage loathsome. NIV 7 I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable. CJB 8 The cohanim didn't ask, 'Where is ADONAI?' Those who deal with the Torah did not know me, the people's shepherds rebelled against me; the prophets prophesied by Ba'al and went after things of no value. NIV 8 The priests did not ask, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols. CJB 9 "So again I state my case against you," says ADONAI, "and state it against your grandchildren too. NIV 9 "Therefore I bring charges against you again," declares the LORD. "And I will bring charges against your children's children. CJB 10 Cross to the coasts of the Kitti'im and look; send to Kedar and observe closely; see if anything like this has happened before: NIV 10 Cross over to the coasts of Kittim and look, send to Kedar and observe closely; see if there has ever been anything like this: CJB 11 has a nation ever exchanged its gods (and theirs are not gods at all!)? Yet my people have exchanged their Glory for something without value. NIV 11 Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols. CJB 12 Be aghast at this, you heavens! Shudder in absolute horror!" says ADONAI. NIV 12 Be appalled at this, O heavens, and shudder with great horror," declares the LORD. CJB 13 "For my people have committed two evils: they have abandoned me, the fountain of living water, and dug themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water! NIV 13 "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. CJB 14 "Is Isra'el a slave, born into serfdom? If not, why has he become plunder? NIV 14 Is Israel a servant, a slave by birth? Why then has he become plunder? CJB 15 The young lions are roaring at him - how loudly they are roaring! They desolate his country, demolishing and depopulating his cities. NIV 15 Lions have roared; they have growled at him. They have laid waste his land; his towns are burned and deserted. CJB 16 The people of Nof and Tachpanches feed on the crown of your head. NIV 16 Also, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have shaved the crown of your head. CJB 17 "Haven't you brought this on yourself by abandoning ADONAI your God when he led you along the way? NIV 17 Have you not brought this on yourselves by forsaking the LORD your God when he led you in the way? CJB 18 If you go to Egypt, what's in it for you? Drinking water from the Nile? If you go to Ashur, what's in it for you? Drinking water from the [Euphrates] River? NIV 18 Now why go to Egypt to drink water from the Shihor ? And why go to Assyria to drink water from the River ? CJB 19 Your own wickedness will correct you, your own backslidings will convict you; you will know and see how bad and bitter it was to abandon ADONAI your God, and how fear of me is not in you," says Adonai ELOHIM-Tzva'ot. NIV 19 Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the LORD your God and have no awe of me," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. CJB 20 "For long ago I broke your yoke; when I snapped your chains, you said, 'I won't sin.' Yet on every high hill, under every green tree, you sprawled and prostituted yourself. NIV 20 "Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your bonds; you said, 'I will not serve you!' Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute. CJB 21 But I planted you as a choice vine of seed fully tested and true. How did you degenerate into a wild vine for me? NIV 21 I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine? CJB 22 Even if you scrub yourself with soda and plenty of soap, the stain of your guilt is still there before me," says Adonai ELOHIM. NIV 22 Although you wash yourself with soda and use an abundance of soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me," declares the Sovereign LORD. CJB 23 "How can you say, 'I am not defiled, I have not pursued the ba'alim'? Look at your conduct in the valley, understand what you have done. You are a restive young female camel, running here and there, NIV 23 "How can you say, 'I am not defiled; I have not run after the Baals'? See how you behaved in the valley; consider what you have done. You are a swift she-camel running here and there, CJB 24 wild, accustomed to the desert, sniffing the wind in her lust - who can control her when she's in heat? Males seeking her need not weary themselves, for at mating season they will find her. NIV 24 a wild donkey accustomed to the desert, sniffing the wind in her craving-- in her heat who can restrain her? Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves; at mating time they will find her. CJB 25 "Stop before your shoes wear out, and your throat is dry from thirst! But you say, 'No, it's hopeless! I love these strangers, and I'm going after them.' NIV 25 Do not run until your feet are bare and your throat is dry. But you said, 'It's no use! I love foreign gods, and I must go after them.' CJB 26 Just as a thief is ashamed when caught, so is the house of Isra'el ashamed - they, their kings, their leaders, their cohanim and their prophets, NIV 26 "As a thief is disgraced when he is caught, so the house of Israel is disgraced-- they, their kings and their officials, their priests and their prophets. CJB 27 who say to a log, 'You are my father,' and to a stone, 'You gave us birth.' For they have turned their backs to me instead of their faces. But when trouble comes, they will plead, 'Rouse yourself and save us!' NIV 27 They say to wood, 'You are my father,' and to stone, 'You gave me birth.' They have turned their backs to me and not their faces; yet when they are in trouble, they say, 'Come and save us!' CJB 28 Where are your gods that you made for yourselves? Let them rouse themselves, if they can save you when trouble comes. Y'hudah, you have as many gods as you have cities! NIV 28 Where then are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble! For you have as many gods as you have towns, O Judah. CJB 29 Why argue with me? You have all rebelled against me!" says ADONAI. NIV 29 "Why do you bring charges against me? You have all rebelled against me," declares the LORD. CJB 30 "In vain have I struck down your people. They would not receive correction. Your own sword has devoured your prophets like a marauding lion. NIV 30 "In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravening lion. CJB 31 You of this generation, look at the word of ADONAI: Have I been a desert to Isra'el? or a land of oppressive darkness? Why do my people say, 'We're free to roam, we will no longer come to you'? NIV 31 "You of this generation, consider the word of the LORD: "Have I been a desert to Israel or a land of great darkness? Why do my people say, 'We are free to roam; we will come to you no more'? CJB 32 Does a girl forget her jewellery, or a bride her wedding sash? Yet my people have forgotten me, days beyond numbering. NIV 32 Does a maiden forget her jewelry, a bride her wedding ornaments? Yet my people have forgotten me, days without number. CJB 33 You are so clever in your search for love that the worst of women can learn from you! NIV 33 How skilled you are at pursuing love! Even the worst of women can learn from your ways. CJB 34 Right there on your clothing is the blood of the innocent poor, although you never caught them breaking and entering. Yet concerning all these things, NIV 34 On your clothes men find the lifeblood of the innocent poor, though you did not catch them breaking in. Yet in spite of all this CJB 35 you say, 'I am innocent; surely he's no longer angry at me.' Here, I am passing sentence on you, because you say, 'I have done nothing wrong.' NIV 35 you say, 'I am innocent; he is not angry with me.' But I will pass judgment on you because you say, 'I have not sinned.' CJB 36 You cheapen yourself when you change course so often - you will be disappointed by Egypt too, just as you were disappointed by Ashur. NIV 36 Why do you go about so much, changing your ways? You will be disappointed by Egypt as you were by Assyria. CJB 37 Yes, you will leave him too, with your hands on your heads [in shame]. For ADONAI rejects those in whom you trust; from them you will gain nothing." NIV 37 You will also leave that place with your hands on your head, for the LORD has rejected those you trust; you will not be helped by them.
