Jeremiah 2

GNT 1 The Lord told me NIV 1 The word of the LORD came to me: GNT 2 to proclaim this message to everyone in Jerusalem. "I remember how faithful you were when you were young, how you loved me when we were first married; you followed me through the desert, through a land that had not been planted. NIV 2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem: " 'I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the desert, through a land not sown. GNT 3 Israel, you belonged to me alone; you were my sacred possession. I sent suffering and disaster on everyone who hurt you. I, the Lord, have spoken." NIV 3 Israel was holy to the LORD, the firstfruits of his harvest; all who devoured her were held guilty, and disaster overtook them,' " declares the LORD. GNT 4 Listen to the Lord's message, you descendants of Jacob, you tribes of Israel. NIV 4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, all you clans of the house of Israel. GNT 5 The Lord says: "What accusation did your ancestors bring against me? What made them turn away from me? They worshiped worthless idols and became worthless themselves. NIV 5 This is what the LORD says: "What fault did your fathers find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves. GNT 6 They did not care about me, even though I rescued them from Egypt and led them through the wilderness: a land of deserts and sand pits, a dry and dangerous land where no one lives and no one will even travel. NIV 6 They did not ask, 'Where is the LORD, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness, through a land of deserts and rifts, a land of drought and darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives?' GNT 7 I brought them into a fertile land, to enjoy its harvests and its other good things. But instead they ruined my land; they defiled the country I had given them. NIV 7 I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable. GNT 8 The priests did not ask, "Where is the Lord?' My own priests did not know me. The rulers rebelled against me; the prophets spoke in the name of Baal and worshiped useless idols. NIV 8 The priests did not ask, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols. GNT 9 "And so I, the Lord, will state my case against my people again. I will bring charges against their descendants. NIV 9 "Therefore I bring charges against you again," declares the LORD. "And I will bring charges against your children's children. GNT 10 Go west to the island of Cyprus, and send someone eastward to the land of Kedar. You will see that nothing like this has ever happened before. NIV 10 Cross over to the coasts of Kittim and look, send to Kedar and observe closely; see if there has ever been anything like this: GNT 11 No other nation has ever changed its gods, even though they were not real. But my people have exchanged me, the God who has brought them honor, for gods that can do nothing for them. NIV 11 Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols. GNT 12 And so I command the sky to shake with horror, to be amazed and astonished, NIV 12 Be appalled at this, O heavens, and shudder with great horror," declares the LORD. GNT 13 for my people have committed two sins: they have turned away from me, the spring of fresh water, and they have dug cisterns, cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all. NIV 13 "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. GNT 14 "Israel is not a slave; he was not born into slavery. Why then do his enemies hunt him down? NIV 14 Is Israel a servant, a slave by birth? Why then has he become plunder? GNT 15 They have roared at him like lions; they have made his land a desert, and his towns lie in ruins, completely abandoned. NIV 15 Lions have roared; they have growled at him. They have laid waste his land; his towns are burned and deserted. GNT 16 Yes, the people of Memphis and Tahpanhes have cracked his skull. NIV 16 Also, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have shaved the crown of your head. GNT 17 Israel, you brought this on yourself! You deserted me, the Lord your God, while I was leading you along the way. NIV 17 Have you not brought this on yourselves by forsaking the LORD your God when he led you in the way? GNT 18 What do you think you will gain by going to Egypt to drink water from the Nile? What do you think you will gain by going to Assyria to drink water from the Euphrates? NIV 18 Now why go to Egypt to drink water from the Shihor ? And why go to Assyria to drink water from the River ? GNT 19 Your own evil will punish you, and your turning from me will condemn you. You will learn how bitter and wrong it is to abandon me, the Lord your God, and no longer to remain faithful to me. I, the Sovereign Lord Almighty, have spoken." NIV 19 Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the LORD your God and have no awe of me," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. GNT 20 The Sovereign Lord says, "Israel, long ago you rejected my authority; you refused to obey me and worship me. On every high hill and under every green tree you worshiped fertility gods. NIV 20 "Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your bonds; you said, 'I will not serve you!' Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute. GNT 21 I planted you like a choice vine from the very best seed. But look what you have become! You are like a rotten, worthless vine. NIV 21 I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine? GNT 22 Even if you washed with the strongest soap, I would still see the stain of your guilt. NIV 22 Although you wash yourself with soda and use an abundance of soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me," declares the Sovereign LORD. GNT 23 How can you say you have not defiled yourself, that you have never worshiped Baal? Look how you sinned in the valley; see what you have done. You are like a wild camel in heat, running around loose, NIV 23 "How can you say, 'I am not defiled; I have not run after the Baals'? See how you behaved in the valley; consider what you have done. You are a swift she-camel running here and there, GNT 24 rushing into the desert. When she is in heat, who can control her? No male that wants her has to trouble himself; she is always available in mating season. NIV 24 a wild donkey accustomed to the desert, sniffing the wind in her craving-- in her heat who can restrain her? Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves; at mating time they will find her. GNT 25 Israel, don't wear your feet out, or let your throat become dry from chasing after other gods. But you say, "No! I can't turn back. I have loved foreign gods and will go after them.' " NIV 25 Do not run until your feet are bare and your throat is dry. But you said, 'It's no use! I love foreign gods, and I must go after them.' GNT 26 The Lord says, "Just as a thief is disgraced when caught, so all you people of Israel will be disgraced - your kings and officials, your priests and prophets. NIV 26 "As a thief is disgraced when he is caught, so the house of Israel is disgraced-- they, their kings and their officials, their priests and their prophets. GNT 27 You will all be disgraced - you that say that a tree is your father and that a rock is your mother. This will happen because you turned away from me instead of turning to me. But when you are in trouble, you ask me to come and save you. NIV 27 They say to wood, 'You are my father,' and to stone, 'You gave me birth.' They have turned their backs to me and not their faces; yet when they are in trouble, they say, 'Come and save us!' GNT 28 "Where are the gods that you made for yourselves? When you are in trouble, let them save you - if they can! Judah, you have as many gods as you have cities. NIV 28 Where then are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble! For you have as many gods as you have towns, O Judah. GNT 29 What is your complaint? Why have you rebelled against me? NIV 29 "Why do you bring charges against me? You have all rebelled against me," declares the LORD. GNT 30 I punished you, but it did no good; you would not let me correct you. Like a raging lion, you have murdered your prophets. NIV 30 "In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravening lion. GNT 31 People of Israel, listen to what I am saying. Have I been like a desert to you, like a dark and dangerous land? Why, then, do you say that you will do as you please, that you will never come back to me? NIV 31 "You of this generation, consider the word of the LORD: "Have I been a desert to Israel or a land of great darkness? Why do my people say, 'We are free to roam; we will come to you no more'? GNT 32 Does a young woman forget her jewelry, or a bride her wedding dress? But my people have forgotten me for more days than can be counted. NIV 32 Does a maiden forget her jewelry, a bride her wedding ornaments? Yet my people have forgotten me, days without number. GNT 33 You certainly know how to chase after lovers. Even the worst of women can learn from you. NIV 33 How skilled you are at pursuing love! Even the worst of women can learn from your ways. GNT 34 Your clothes are stained with the blood of the poor and innocent, not with the blood of burglars. "But in spite of all this, NIV 34 On your clothes men find the lifeblood of the innocent poor, though you did not catch them breaking in. Yet in spite of all this GNT 35 you say, "I am innocent; surely the Lord is no longer angry with me.' But I, the Lord, will punish you because you deny that you have sinned. NIV 35 you say, 'I am innocent; he is not angry with me.' But I will pass judgment on you because you say, 'I have not sinned.' GNT 36 You have cheapened yourself by turning to the gods of other nations. You will be disappointed by Egypt, just as you were by Assyria. NIV 36 Why do you go about so much, changing your ways? You will be disappointed by Egypt as you were by Assyria. GNT 37 You will turn away from Egypt, hanging your head in shame. I, the Lord, have rejected those you trust; you will not gain anything from them." NIV 37 You will also leave that place with your hands on your head, for the LORD has rejected those you trust; you will not be helped by them.
