HNV 1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying, NIV 1 The word of the LORD came to me: HNV 2 Go, and cry in the ears of Yerushalayim, saying, Thus says the LORD, I remember for you the kindness of your youth, the love of your weddings; how you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown. NIV 2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem: " 'I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the desert, through a land not sown. HNV 3 Yisra'el [was] holiness to the LORD, the first fruits of his increase: all who devour him shall be held guilty; evil shall come on them, says the LORD. NIV 3 Israel was holy to the LORD, the firstfruits of his harvest; all who devoured her were held guilty, and disaster overtook them,' " declares the LORD. HNV 4 Hear you the word of the LORD, O house of Ya`akov, and all the families of the house of Yisra'el: NIV 4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, all you clans of the house of Israel. HNV 5 thus says the LORD, What unrighteousness have your fathers found in me, that they have gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain? NIV 5 This is what the LORD says: "What fault did your fathers find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves. HNV 6 Neither said they, Where is the LORD who brought us up out of the land of Mitzrayim, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that none passed through, and where no man lived? NIV 6 They did not ask, 'Where is the LORD, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness, through a land of deserts and rifts, a land of drought and darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives?' HNV 7 I brought you into a plentiful land, to eat the fruit of it and the goodness of it; but when you entered, you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. NIV 7 I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable. HNV 8 The Kohanim didn't say, Where is the LORD? and those who handle the law didn't know me: the rulers also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Ba`al, and walked after things that do not profit. NIV 8 The priests did not ask, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols. HNV 9 Therefore I will yet contend with you, says the LORD, and with your children's children will I contend. NIV 9 "Therefore I bring charges against you again," declares the LORD. "And I will bring charges against your children's children. HNV 10 For pass over to the isles of Kittiyim, and see; and send to Kedar, and consider diligently; and see if there has been such a thing. NIV 10 Cross over to the coasts of Kittim and look, send to Kedar and observe closely; see if there has ever been anything like this: HNV 11 Has a nation changed [its] gods, which yet are no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit. NIV 11 Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols. HNV 12 Be astonished, you heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be you very desolate, says the LORD. NIV 12 Be appalled at this, O heavens, and shudder with great horror," declares the LORD. HNV 13 For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the spring of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. NIV 13 "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. HNV 14 Is Yisra'el a servant? is he a home-born [slave]? why is he become a prey? NIV 14 Is Israel a servant, a slave by birth? Why then has he become plunder? HNV 15 The young lions have roared on him, and yelled; and they have made his land waste: his cities are burned up, without inhabitant. NIV 15 Lions have roared; they have growled at him. They have laid waste his land; his towns are burned and deserted. HNV 16 The children also of Mof and Tachpanches have broken the crown of your head. NIV 16 Also, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have shaved the crown of your head. HNV 17 Haven't you procured this to yourself, in that you have forsaken the LORD your God, when he led you by the way? NIV 17 Have you not brought this on yourselves by forsaking the LORD your God when he led you in the way? HNV 18 Now what have you to do in the way to Mitzrayim, to drink the waters of the Shichor? or what have you to do in the way to Ashshur, to drink the waters of the River? NIV 18 Now why go to Egypt to drink water from the Shihor ? And why go to Assyria to drink water from the River ? HNV 19 Your own wickedness shall correct you, and your backsliding shall reprove you: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that you have forsaken the LORD your God, and that my fear is not in you, says the Lord, the LORD of Hosts. NIV 19 Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the LORD your God and have no awe of me," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. HNV 20 For of old time I have broken your yoke, and burst your bonds; and you said, I will not serve; for on every high hill and under every green tree you did bow yourself, playing the prostitute. NIV 20 "Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your bonds; you said, 'I will not serve you!' Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute. HNV 21 Yet I had planted you a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then are you turned into the degenerate branches of a foreign vine to me? NIV 21 I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine? HNV 22 For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap, yet your iniquity is marked before me, says the Lord GOD. NIV 22 Although you wash yourself with soda and use an abundance of soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me," declares the Sovereign LORD. HNV 23 How can you say, I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Ba`alim? see your way in the valley, know what you have done: [you are] a swift dromedary traversing her ways; NIV 23 "How can you say, 'I am not defiled; I have not run after the Baals'? See how you behaved in the valley; consider what you have done. You are a swift she-camel running here and there, HNV 24 a wild donkey used to the wilderness, that snuffs up the wind in her desire; in her occasion who can turn her away? all those who seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her. NIV 24 a wild donkey accustomed to the desert, sniffing the wind in her craving-- in her heat who can restrain her? Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves; at mating time they will find her. HNV 25 Withhold your foot from being unshod, and your throat from thirst: but you said, It is in vain; no, for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go. NIV 25 Do not run until your feet are bare and your throat is dry. But you said, 'It's no use! I love foreign gods, and I must go after them.' HNV 26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Yisra'el ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their Kohanim, and their prophets; NIV 26 "As a thief is disgraced when he is caught, so the house of Israel is disgraced-- they, their kings and their officials, their priests and their prophets. HNV 27 who tell a stock, You are my father; and to a stone, You have brought me forth: for they have turned their back to me, and not their face; but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us. NIV 27 They say to wood, 'You are my father,' and to stone, 'You gave me birth.' They have turned their backs to me and not their faces; yet when they are in trouble, they say, 'Come and save us!' HNV 28 But where are your gods that you have made you? let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble: for according to the number of your cities are your gods, Yehudah. NIV 28 Where then are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble! For you have as many gods as you have towns, O Judah. HNV 29 Why will you contend with me? you all have transgressed against me, says the LORD. NIV 29 "Why do you bring charges against me? You have all rebelled against me," declares the LORD. HNV 30 In vain have I struck your children; they received no correction: your own sword has devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion. NIV 30 "In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravening lion. HNV 31 Generation, see the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Yisra'el? or a land of thick darkness? why say my people, We are broken loose; we will come no more to you? NIV 31 "You of this generation, consider the word of the LORD: "Have I been a desert to Israel or a land of great darkness? Why do my people say, 'We are free to roam; we will come to you no more'? HNV 32 Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number. NIV 32 Does a maiden forget her jewelry, a bride her wedding ornaments? Yet my people have forgotten me, days without number. HNV 33 How trimmest you your way to seek love! therefore even the wicked women have you taught your ways. NIV 33 How skilled you are at pursuing love! Even the worst of women can learn from your ways. HNV 34 Also in your skirts is found the blood of the souls of the innocent poor: you did not find them breaking in; but it is because of all these things. NIV 34 On your clothes men find the lifeblood of the innocent poor, though you did not catch them breaking in. Yet in spite of all this HNV 35 Yet you said, I am innocent; surely his anger is turned away from me. Behold, I will enter into judgment with you, because you say, I have not sinned. NIV 35 you say, 'I am innocent; he is not angry with me.' But I will pass judgment on you because you say, 'I have not sinned.' HNV 36 Why go you about so much to change your way? you shall be ashamed of Mitzrayim also, as you were ashamed of Ashshur. NIV 36 Why do you go about so much, changing your ways? You will be disappointed by Egypt as you were by Assyria. HNV 37 From there also shall you go forth, with your hands on your head: for the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, and you shall not prosper with them. NIV 37 You will also leave that place with your hands on your head, for the LORD has rejected those you trust; you will not be helped by them.
