Jeremiah 20:8-18

CSB 8 For whenever I speak, I cry out- I proclaim: Violence and destruction! because the word of the Lord has become for me constant disgrace and derision. NIV 8 Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the LORD has brought me insult and reproach all day long. CSB 9 If I say: I won't mention Him or speak any longer in His name, His message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones. I become tired of holding it in, and I cannot prevail. NIV 9 But if I say, "I will not mention him or speak any more in his name," his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot. CSB 10 For I have heard the gossip of the multitudes, "Terror is on every side! Report [him]; let's report him!" Everyone I trusted watches for my fall. "Perhaps he will be deceived so that we might prevail against him and take our vengeance on him." NIV 10 I hear many whispering, "Terror on every side! Report him! Let's report him!" All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying, "Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him." CSB 11 But the Lord is with me like a violent warrior. Therefore, my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. Since they have not succeeded, they will be utterly shamed, an everlasting humiliation that will never be forgotten. NIV 11 But the LORD is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced; their dishonor will never be forgotten. CSB 12 Lord of Hosts, testing the righteous and seeing the heart and mind, let me see Your vengeance on them, for I have presented my case to You. NIV 12 O LORD Almighty, you who examine the righteous and probe the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you I have committed my cause. CSB 13 Sing to the Lord! Praise the Lord, for He rescues the life of the needy from the hand of evil people. NIV 13 Sing to the LORD! Give praise to the LORD! He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked. CSB 14 Cursed be the day on which I was born. The day my mother bore me- let it never be blessed. NIV 14 Cursed be the day I was born! May the day my mother bore me not be blessed! CSB 15 Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father, saying, "A male child is born to you," bringing him great joy. NIV 15 Cursed be the man who brought my father the news, who made him very glad, saying, "A child is born to you--a son!" CSB 16 Let that man be like the cities the Lord overthrew without compassion. Let him hear an outcry in the morning and a war cry at noontime NIV 16 May that man be like the towns the LORD overthrew without pity. May he hear wailing in the morning, a battle cry at noon. CSB 17 because he didn't kill me in the womb so that my mother might have been my grave, her womb eternally pregnant. NIV 17 For he did not kill me in the womb, with my mother as my grave, her womb enlarged forever. CSB 18 Why did I come out of the womb to see [only] struggle and sorrow, to end my life in shame? NIV 18 Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my days in shame?
