Jeremiah 22

HNV 1 Thus said the LORD: Go down to the house of the king of Yehudah, and speak there this word, NIV 1 This is what the LORD says: "Go down to the palace of the king of Judah and proclaim this message there: HNV 2 Say, Hear the word of the LORD, king of Yehudah, who sits on the throne of David, you, and your servants, and your people who enter in by these gates. NIV 2 'Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, you who sit on David's throne--you, your officials and your people who come through these gates. HNV 3 Thus says the LORD: Execute you justice and righteousness, and deliver him who is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence, to the sojourner, the fatherless, nor the widow; neither shed innocent blood in this place. NIV 3 This is what the LORD says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of his oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the alien, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place. HNV 4 For if you do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people. NIV 4 For if you are careful to carry out these commands, then kings who sit on David's throne will come through the gates of this palace, riding in chariots and on horses, accompanied by their officials and their people. HNV 5 But if you will not hear these words, I swear by myself, says the LORD, that this house shall become a desolation. NIV 5 But if you do not obey these commands, declares the LORD, I swear by myself that this palace will become a ruin.' " HNV 6 For thus says the LORD concerning the house of the king of Yehudah: You are Gil`ad to me, [and] the head of Levanon; [yet] surely I will make you a wilderness, [and] cities which are not inhabited. NIV 6 For this is what the LORD says about the palace of the king of Judah: "Though you are like Gilead to me, like the summit of Lebanon, I will surely make you like a desert, like towns not inhabited. HNV 7 I will prepare destroyers against you, everyone with his weapons; and they shall cut down your choice cedars, and cast them into the fire. NIV 7 I will send destroyers against you, each man with his weapons, and they will cut up your fine cedar beams and throw them into the fire. HNV 8 Many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbor, Why has the LORD done thus to this great city? NIV 8 "People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another, 'Why has the LORD done such a thing to this great city?' HNV 9 Then they shall answer, Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD their God, and worshiped other gods, and served them. NIV 9 And the answer will be: 'Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God and have worshiped and served other gods.' " HNV 10 Don't you weep for the dead, neither bemoan him; but weep sore for him who goes away; for he shall return no more, nor see his native country. NIV 10 Do not weep for the dead [king ] or mourn his loss; rather, weep bitterly for him who is exiled, because he will never return nor see his native land again. HNV 11 For thus says the LORD touching Shallum the son of Yoshiyahu, king of Yehudah, who reigned instead of Yoshiyahu his father, [and] who went forth out of this place: He shall not return there any more. NIV 11 For this is what the LORD says about Shallum son of Josiah, who succeeded his father as king of Judah but has gone from this place: "He will never return. HNV 12 But in the place where they have led him captive, there shall he die, and he shall see this land no more. NIV 12 He will die in the place where they have led him captive; he will not see this land again." HNV 13 Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by injustice; who uses his neighbor's service without wages, and doesn't give him his hire; NIV 13 "Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, his upper rooms by injustice, making his countrymen work for nothing, not paying them for their labor. HNV 14 who says, I will build me a wide house and spacious chambers, and cuts him out windows; and it is ceiling with cedar, and painted with vermilion. NIV 14 He says, 'I will build myself a great palace with spacious upper rooms.' So he makes large windows in it, panels it with cedar and decorates it in red. HNV 15 Shall you reign, because you strive to excel in cedar? Didn't your father eat and drink, and do justice and righteousness? then it was well with him. NIV 15 "Does it make you a king to have more and more cedar? Did not your father have food and drink? He did what was right and just, so all went well with him. HNV 16 He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well. Wasn't this to know me? says the LORD. NIV 16 He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?" declares the LORD. HNV 17 But your eyes and your heart are not but for your covetousness, and for shedding innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it. NIV 17 "But your eyes and your heart are set only on dishonest gain, on shedding innocent blood and on oppression and extortion." HNV 18 Therefore thus says the LORD concerning Yehoiakim the son of Yoshiyahu, king of Yehudah: they shall not lament for him, [saying], Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! They shall not lament for him, [saying] Ah lord! or, Ah his glory! NIV 18 Therefore this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: "They will not mourn for him: 'Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!' They will not mourn for him: 'Alas, my master! Alas, his splendor!' HNV 19 He shall be buried with the burial of a donkey, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Yerushalayim. NIV 19 He will have the burial of a donkey-- dragged away and thrown outside the gates of Jerusalem." HNV 20 Go up to Levanon, and cry; and lift up your voice in Bashan, and cry from `Avarimen; for all your lovers are destroyed. NIV 20 "Go up to Lebanon and cry out, let your voice be heard in Bashan, cry out from Abarim, for all your allies are crushed. HNV 21 I spoke to you in your prosperity; but you said, I will not hear. This has been your manner from your youth, that you didn't obey my voice. NIV 21 I warned you when you felt secure, but you said, 'I will not listen!' This has been your way from your youth; you have not obeyed me. HNV 22 The wind shall feed all your shepherds, and your lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shall you be ashamed and confounded for all your wickedness. NIV 22 The wind will drive all your shepherds away, and your allies will go into exile. Then you will be ashamed and disgraced because of all your wickedness. HNV 23 Inhabitant of Levanon, who makes your nest in the cedars, how greatly to be pitied shall you be when pangs come on you, the pain as of a woman in travail! NIV 23 You who live in 'Lebanon,' who are nestled in cedar buildings, how you will groan when pangs come upon you, pain like that of a woman in labor! HNV 24 As I live, says the LORD, though Konyahu the son of Yehoiakim king of Yehudah were the signet on my right hand, yet would I pluck you there; NIV 24 "As surely as I live," declares the LORD, "even if you, Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring on my right hand, I would still pull you off. HNV 25 and I will give you into the hand of those who seek your life, and into the hand of them of whom you are afraid, even into the hand of Nevukhadretztzar king of Bavel, and into the hand of the Kasdim. NIV 25 I will hand you over to those who seek your life, those you fear--to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to the Babylonians. HNV 26 I will cast you out, and your mother who bore you, into another country, where you were not born; and there shall you die. NIV 26 I will hurl you and the mother who gave you birth into another country, where neither of you was born, and there you both will die. HNV 27 But to the land whereunto their soul longs to return, there shall they not return. NIV 27 You will never come back to the land you long to return to." HNV 28 Is this man Konyahu a despised broken vessel? is he a vessel in which none delights? why are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into the land which they don't know? NIV 28 Is this man Jehoiachin a despised, broken pot, an object no one wants? Why will he and his children be hurled out, cast into a land they do not know? HNV 29 O eretz, eretz, eretz, hear the word of the LORD. NIV 29 O land, land, land, hear the word of the LORD! HNV 30 Thus says the LORD, Write you this man childless, a man who shall not prosper in his days; for no more shall a man of his seed prosper, sitting on the throne of David, and ruling in Yehudah. NIV 30 This is what the LORD says: "Record this man as if childless, a man who will not prosper in his lifetime, for none of his offspring will prosper, none will sit on the throne of David or rule anymore in Judah."
