Jeremiah 23

CEB 1 Watch out, you shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture, declares the LORD. NIV 1 "Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!" declares the LORD. CEB 2 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, proclaims about the shepherds who "tend to" my people: You are the ones who have scattered my flock and driven them away. You haven't attended to their needs, so I will take revenge on you for the terrible things you have done to them, declares the LORD. NIV 2 Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: "Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done," declares the LORD. CEB 3 I myself will gather the few remaining sheep from all the countries where I have driven them. I will bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fruitful and multiply. NIV 3 "I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. CEB 4 I will place over them shepherds who care for them. Then they will no longer be afraid or dread harm, nor will any be missing, declares the LORD. NIV 4 I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing," declares the LORD CEB 5 The time is coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up a righteous descendant from David's line, and he will rule as a wise king. He will do what is just and right in the land. NIV 5 "The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. CEB 6 During his lifetime, Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And his name will be The LORD Is Our Righteousness. NIV 6 In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness. CEB 7 So the time is coming, declares the LORD, when no one will say, "As the LORD lives who brought up the Israelites from the land of Egypt." NIV 7 "So then, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "when people will no longer say, 'As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,' CEB 8 Instead, they will say, "As the LORD lives who brought up the descendants of the people of Israel from the land of the north and from all the lands where he has banished them so that they can live in their own land." NIV 8 but they will say, 'As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.' Then they will live in their own land." CEB 9 As for the prophets: My heart inside me is broken; my body aches. I stagger like a drunk who has had too much wine to drink, because of the LORD and because of God's holy words. NIV 9 Concerning the prophets: My heart is broken within me; all my bones tremble. I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine, because of the LORD and his holy words. CEB 10 Because the country teems with adulterers, because of them, yes, because their might isn't right and their way is evil, the land dries up, and the grazing areas in the wilderness wither. NIV 10 The land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land lies parched and the pastures in the desert are withered. The [ prophets] follow an evil course and use their power unjustly. CEB 11 Both prophet and priest are godless; I even find their evil in my temple, declares the LORD. NIV 11 "Both prophet and priest are godless; even in my temple I find their wickedness," declares the LORD. CEB 12 Therefore, they will find themselves on slippery ground and will be thrust into darkness, where they will collapse. I will bring disaster upon them, when their time comes, declares the LORD. NIV 12 "Therefore their path will become slippery; they will be banished to darkness and there they will fall. I will bring disaster on them in the year they are punished," declares the LORD. CEB 13 In the prophets of Samaria I saw something shocking: They prophesied by Baal and led astray my people Israel. NIV 13 "Among the prophets of Samaria I saw this repulsive thing: They prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray. CEB 14 In the prophets of Jerusalem I saw something horrible: They commit adultery and tell lies. They encourage evildoers so that no one turns from their wickedness. In my eyes, they are no better than Sodom; its people are like Gomorrah. NIV 14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah." CEB 15 Therefore, this is what the LORD of heavenly forces proclaims concerning the prophets: I'm going to feed them bitter food and give them poison to drink. Wickedness has spread from the prophets of Jerusalem throughout the land. NIV 15 Therefore, this is what the LORD Almighty says concerning the prophets: "I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned water, because from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land." CEB 16 The LORD proclaims: Don't listen to the prophets who are speaking to you; they are deceiving you. Their visions come from their own hearts, not from the LORD's mouth. NIV 16 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. CEB 17 They keep saying to those who scorn God's message, "All will go well for you," and to those who follow their own willful hearts, "Nothing bad will happen to you." NIV 17 They keep saying to those who despise me, 'The LORD says: You will have peace.' And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts they say, 'No harm will come to you.' CEB 18 But who has stood in the LORD's council to listen to God's word? Who has paid attention to his word and announced it? NIV 18 But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD to see or to hear his word? Who has listened and heard his word? CEB 19 Look! The LORD's angry storm breaks out; it whirls around the heads of the wicked. NIV 19 See, the storm of the LORD will burst out in wrath, a whirlwind swirling down on the heads of the wicked CEB 20 The LORD's fierce anger won't turn back until it accomplishes all that he has planned. In the days to come, you will understand what this means. NIV 20 The anger of the LORD will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of his heart. In days to come you will understand it clearly. CEB 21 I didn't send the prophets, yet they ran anyway. I didn't speak to them, yet they prophesied anyway. NIV 21 I did not send these prophets, yet they have run with their message; I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied CEB 22 If they had stood in my council, they would have proclaimed my words to my people; they would have turned them from their evil ways and deeds. NIV 22 But if they had stood in my council, they would have proclaimed my words to my people and would have turned them from their evil ways and from their evil deeds. CEB 23 The LORD declares, Am I a God who is only nearby and not far off? NIV 23 "Am I only a God nearby," declares the LORD, "and not a God far away? CEB 24 Can people hide themselves in secret places so I might not see them? Don't I fill heaven and earth? NIV 24 Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?" declares the LORD. "Do not I fill heaven and earth?" declares the LORD. CEB 25 I have heard the prophets prophesying lies in my name. They claim, "I've had a dream; I've had a dream!" NIV 25 "I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in my name. They say, 'I had a dream! I had a dream!' CEB 26 How long will deceitful prophecies dominate the minds of the prophets? Those prophets are treacherous. NIV 26 How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds? CEB 27 They scheme to make my people forget me by their dreams that people tell each other, just as their ancestors forgot me because of Baal. NIV 27 They think the dreams they tell one another will make my people forget my name, just as their fathers forgot my name through Baal worship. CEB 28 Let the prophet who has a dream declare it, but let the one who has my word proclaim it faithfully. What a difference between straw and wheat! declares the LORD. NIV 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell his dream, but let the one who has my word speak it faithfully. For what has straw to do with grain?" declares the LORD. CEB 29 Isn't my word like fire and like a hammer that shatters rock? declares the LORD. NIV 29 "Is not my word like fire," declares the LORD, "and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces? CEB 30 Therefore, I'm against the prophets who steal my words from each other, declares the LORD. NIV 30 "Therefore," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets who steal from one another words supposedly from me. CEB 31 I'm against the prophets who carelessly deliver oracles, declares the LORD. NIV 31 Yes," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, 'The LORD declares.' CEB 32 I'm against the prophets who dream up lies and then proclaim them, declares the LORD. With their reckless lies, they lead my people astray. I didn't send them; I didn't commission them. They are completely useless to these people, declares the LORD. NIV 32 Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams," declares the LORD. "They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least," declares the LORD. CEB 33 When these people or a prophet or a priest asks you, "What is the LORD's message?" say to them, "What message? I will cast you off, declares the LORD." NIV 33 "When these people, or a prophet or a priest, ask you, 'What is the oracle of the LORD?' say to them, 'What oracle? I will forsake you, declares the LORD.' CEB 34 I will punish anyone, including prophet or priest, who says, "This is the LORD's message." NIV 34 If a prophet or a priest or anyone else claims, 'This is the oracle of the LORD,' I will punish that man and his household. CEB 35 This is what you should ask each other: "What has the LORD said?""What has the LORD declared?" NIV 35 This is what each of you keeps on saying to his friend or relative: 'What is the LORD's answer?' or 'What has the LORD spoken?' CEB 36 But you are no longer to mention the LORD's message, because everyone thinks they have received a message from the LORD. You destroy the very word of the living God, the LORD of heavenly forces, our God. NIV 36 But you must not mention 'the oracle of the LORD' again, because every man's own word becomes his oracle and so you distort the words of the living God, the LORD Almighty, our God CEB 37 So this is what you should say to the prophet: "What has the LORD said to you?""What has the LORD declared?" NIV 37 This is what you keep saying to a prophet: 'What is the LORD's answer to you?' or 'What has the LORD spoken?' CEB 38 But if you insist on saying, "This is the LORD's message," the LORD says to you: Because you have made this claim—this is the LORD's message—when I told you not to proclaim the LORD's message, NIV 38 Although you claim, 'This is the oracle of the LORD,' this is what the LORD says: You used the words, 'This is the oracle of the LORD,' even though I told you that you must not claim, 'This is the oracle of the LORD. CEB 39 I will lift you up and cast you out of my presence, together with the city that I gave to your ancestors. NIV 39 Therefore, I will surely forget you and cast you out of my presence along with the city I gave to you and your fathers. CEB 40 I will make you an object of disgrace and enduring shame that no one will ever forget. NIV 40 I will bring upon you everlasting disgrace--everlasting shame that will not be forgotten."
