Jeremiah 4

GW 1 The LORD declares, "If you come back, Israel, if you come back to me, if you take your disgusting idols out of my sight and you don't wander away from me, NIV 1 "If you will return, O Israel, return to me," declares the LORD. "If you put your detestable idols out of my sight and no longer go astray, GW 2 if you take the oath, "As the LORD lives..." in an honest, fair, and right way, then the nations will be blessed, and they will be honored by me." NIV 2 and if in a truthful, just and righteous way you swear, 'As surely as the LORD lives,' then the nations will be blessed by him and in him they will glory." GW 3 This is what the LORD says to the people of Judah and to Jerusalem: Plow your unplowed fields, and don't plant among thorns. NIV 3 This is what the LORD says to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem: "Break up your unplowed ground and do not sow among thorns. GW 4 Be circumcised by the LORD, and get rid of the foreskins of your hearts, people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. If you don't, my fury will flare up like a fire. It will burn, and no one will be able to put it out, because of the evil you do. NIV 4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, circumcise your hearts, you men of Judah and people of Jerusalem, or my wrath will break out and burn like fire because of the evil you have done-- burn with no one to quench it. GW 5 Report this message in Judah. Make it heard in Jerusalem. Say, "Blow the ram's horn throughout the land." Shout loudly and say, "Gather together! Let's go into the fortified cities." NIV 5 "Announce in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem and say: 'Sound the trumpet throughout the land!' Cry aloud and say: 'Gather together! Let us flee to the fortified cities!' GW 6 Raise the flag to signal people to go to Zion. Take cover! Don't just stand there! I'm bringing disaster and widespread destruction from the north. NIV 6 Raise the signal to go to Zion! Flee for safety without delay! For I am bringing disaster from the north, even terrible destruction." GW 7 A lion has come out of its lair. A destroyer of nations has set out. He has left his place to destroy your land. Your cities will be ruined, and no one will live in them. NIV 7 A lion has come out of his lair; a destroyer of nations has set out. He has left his place to lay waste your land. Your towns will lie in ruins without inhabitant. GW 8 So put on sackcloth, mourn, and cry because the LORD's burning anger hasn't turned away from us. NIV 8 So put on sackcloth, lament and wail, for the fierce anger of the LORD has not turned away from us. GW 9 "When that day comes," declares the LORD, "the king and the leaders will lose their courage. The priests will be stunned. The prophets will be amazed and astonished." NIV 9 "In that day," declares the LORD, "the king and the officials will lose heart, the priests will be horrified, and the prophets will be appalled." GW 10 I said, "Almighty LORD, you certainly have deceived these people and Jerusalem. You said that everything would go well for them, but a sword is held at their throats." NIV 10 Then I said, "Ah, Sovereign LORD, how completely you have deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying, 'You will have peace,' when the sword is at our throats." GW 11 At that time it will be said to these people and to Jerusalem: "A hot wind from the heights will blow in the desert on the tracks of my people. It will not be a wind that winnows or cleanses. NIV 11 At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, "A scorching wind from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse; GW 12 It will be a stronger wind than that. It will come from me. Now, I will pass sentence on them." NIV 12 a wind too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments against them." GW 13 The enemy comes up like clouds. His chariots are like a raging wind. His horses are faster than eagles. How horrible it will be for us! We will be destroyed! NIV 13 Look! He advances like the clouds, his chariots come like a whirlwind, his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us! We are ruined! GW 14 Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart so that you may be rescued. Don't continue making evil plans. NIV 14 O Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart and be saved. How long will you harbor wicked thoughts? GW 15 A message is heard from Dan, and a report of disaster comes from the mountains of Ephraim. NIV 15 A voice is announcing from Dan, proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim. GW 16 Warn the nations about these things. Bring them to the attention of Jerusalem. "Hostile troops are coming from a distant country. They are shouting battle cries against the cities of Judah. NIV 16 "Tell this to the nations, proclaim it to Jerusalem: 'A besieging army is coming from a distant land, raising a war cry against the cities of Judah. GW 17 They surround them like men guarding a field, because Judah has rebelled against me," declares the LORD. NIV 17 They surround her like men guarding a field, because she has rebelled against me,' " declares the LORD. GW 18 "You brought this on yourself. This is your punishment. It is bitter. It breaks your heart." NIV 18 "Your own conduct and actions have brought this upon you. This is your punishment. How bitter it is! How it pierces to the heart!" GW 19 My anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain. My heart is beating wildly! My heart is pounding! I can't keep quiet because I hear a ram's horn sounding the alarm for war. NIV 19 Oh, my anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain. Oh, the agony of my heart! My heart pounds within me, I cannot keep silent. For I have heard the sound of the trumpet; I have heard the battle cry. GW 20 One disaster follows another. The whole land is ruined. My tents are suddenly destroyed. Their curtains are torn in an instant. NIV 20 Disaster follows disaster; the whole land lies in ruins. In an instant my tents are destroyed, my shelter in a moment. GW 21 How long must I see the battle flag and hear the sound of rams' horns? NIV 21 How long must I see the battle standard and hear the sound of the trumpet? GW 22 "My people are fools. They don't know me. They are stupid people. They don't understand. They are experts in doing wrong, and they don't know how to do good." NIV 22 "My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good." GW 23 I see the earth. It's formless and empty. I see the sky. Its lights are gone. NIV 23 I looked at the earth, and it was formless and empty; and at the heavens, and their light was gone. GW 24 I see the mountains. They are shaking, and the hills are swaying. NIV 24 I looked at the mountains, and they were quaking; all the hills were swaying. GW 25 I see that there are no people, and every bird has flown away. NIV 25 I looked, and there were no people; every bird in the sky had flown away. GW 26 I see that the fertile land has become a desert, and all its cities are torn down because of the LORD and his burning anger. NIV 26 I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert; all its towns lay in ruins before the LORD, before his fierce anger. GW 27 This is what the LORD says: The whole earth will be ruined, although I will not destroy it completely. NIV 27 This is what the LORD says: "The whole land will be ruined, though I will not destroy it completely. GW 28 The earth will mourn, and the sky will grow black. I have spoken, and I have planned it. I won't change my plans, and I won't turn back. NIV 28 Therefore the earth will mourn and the heavens above grow dark, because I have spoken and will not relent, I have decided and will not turn back." GW 29 All the people in the city will flee at the sound of riders and archers. They will go off into the thickets and climb among the rocks. The entire city will be abandoned, and no one will live in it. NIV 29 At the sound of horsemen and archers every town takes to flight. Some go into the thickets; some climb up among the rocks. All the towns are deserted; no one lives in them. GW 30 You are going to be destroyed! What are you going to do? Why do you dress in red and put on gold jewelry? Why do you wear eye shadow? You are making yourself beautiful for nothing. Your lovers reject you; they want to kill you. NIV 30 What are you doing, O devastated one? Why dress yourself in scarlet and put on jewels of gold? Why shade your eyes with paint? You adorn yourself in vain. Your lovers despise you; they seek your life. GW 31 I hear a woman in labor. I hear the woman cry with anguish as she gives birth to her first child. My people Zion are gasping for breath. They are stretching out their hands, saying, "How horrible it is for us! We're defenseless in the presence of murderers!" NIV 31 I hear a cry as of a woman in labor, a groan as of one bearing her first child-- the cry of the Daughter of Zion gasping for breath, stretching out her hands and saying, "Alas! I am fainting; my life is given over to murderers."
