Jeremiah 48

HNV 1 Of Mo'av. Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Yisra'el: Woe to Nevo! for it is laid waste; Kiryatayim is put to shame, it is taken; Misgav is put to shame and broken down. NIV 1 Concerning Moab: This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "Woe to Nebo, for it will be ruined. Kiriathaim will be disgraced and captured; the stronghold will be disgraced and shattered. HNV 2 The praise of Mo'av is no more; in Heshbon they have devised evil against her: Come, and let us cut her off from being a nation. You also, Madmen, shall be brought to silence: the sword shall pursue you. NIV 2 Moab will be praised no more; in Heshbon men will plot her downfall: 'Come, let us put an end to that nation.' You too, O Madmen, will be silenced; the sword will pursue you. HNV 3 The sound of a cry from Horonayim, desolation and great destruction! NIV 3 Listen to the cries from Horonaim, cries of great havoc and destruction. HNV 4 Mo'av is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard. NIV 4 Moab will be broken; her little ones will cry out. HNV 5 For by the ascent of Luchit with continual weeping shall they go up; for at the descent of Horonayim they have heard the distress of the cry of destruction. NIV 5 They go up the way to Luhith, weeping bitterly as they go; on the road down to Horonaim anguished cries over the destruction are heard. HNV 6 Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath in the wilderness. NIV 6 Flee! Run for your lives; become like a bush in the desert. HNV 7 For, because you have trusted in your works and in your treasures, you also shall be taken: and Kemosh shall go forth into captivity, his Kohanim and his princes together. NIV 7 Since you trust in your deeds and riches, you too will be taken captive, and Chemosh will go into exile, together with his priests and officials. HNV 8 The destroyer shall come on every city, and no city shall escape; the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed; as the LORD has spoken. NIV 8 The destroyer will come against every town, and not a town will escape. The valley will be ruined and the plateau destroyed, because the LORD has spoken. HNV 9 Give wings to Mo'av, that she may fly and get her away: and her cities shall become a desolation, without any to dwell therein. NIV 9 Put salt on Moab, for she will be laid waste; her towns will become desolate, with no one to live in them. HNV 10 Cursed be he who does the work of the LORD negligently; and cursed be he who keeps back his sword from blood. NIV 10 "A curse on him who is lax in doing the LORD's work! A curse on him who keeps his sword from bloodshed! HNV 11 Mo'av has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his lees, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither has he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remains in him, and his scent is not changed. NIV 11 "Moab has been at rest from youth, like wine left on its dregs, not poured from one jar to another-- she has not gone into exile. So she tastes as she did, and her aroma is unchanged. HNV 12 Therefore, behold, the days come, says the LORD, that I will send to him those who pour off, and they shall pour him off; and they shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles in pieces. NIV 12 But days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will send men who pour from jars, and they will pour her out; they will empty her jars and smash her jugs. HNV 13 Mo'av shall be ashamed of Kemosh, as the house of Yisra'el was ashamed of Beit-El their confidence. NIV 13 Then Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed when they trusted in Bethel. HNV 14 How say you, We are mighty men, and valiant men for the war? NIV 14 "How can you say, 'We are warriors, men valiant in battle'? HNV 15 Mo'av is laid waste, and they are gone up into his cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, says the King, whose name is the LORD of Hosts. NIV 15 Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded; her finest young men will go down in the slaughter," declares the King, whose name is the LORD Almighty. HNV 16 The calamity of Mo'av is near to come, and his affliction hurries fast. NIV 16 "The fall of Moab is at hand; her calamity will come quickly. HNV 17 All you who are round about him, bemoan him, and all you who know his name; say, How is the strong staff broken, the beautiful rod! NIV 17 Mourn for her, all who live around her, all who know her fame; say, 'How broken is the mighty scepter, how broken the glorious staff !' HNV 18 You daughter who dwells in Divon, come down from your glory, and sit in thirst; for the destroyer of Mo'av is come up against you, he has destroyed your strongholds. NIV 18 "Come down from your glory and sit on the parched ground, O inhabitants of the Daughter of Dibon, for he who destroys Moab will come up against you and ruin your fortified cities. HNV 19 Inhabitant of `Aro`er, stand by the way, and watch: ask him who flees, and her who escapes; say, What has been done? NIV 19 Stand by the road and watch, you who live in Aroer. Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping, ask them, 'What has happened?' HNV 20 Mo'av is put to shame; for it is broken down: wail and cry; tell you it by the Arnon, that Mo'av is laid waste. NIV 20 Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered. Wail and cry out! Announce by the Arnon that Moab is destroyed. HNV 21 Judgment is come on the plain country, on Holon, and on Yahtzah, and on Mefa`at, NIV 21 Judgment has come to the plateau-- to Holon, Jahzah and Mephaath, HNV 22 and on Divon, and on Nevo, and on Beit-Divlatayim, NIV 22 to Dibon, Nebo and Beth Diblathaim, HNV 23 and on Kiryatayim, and on Beit-Gamul, and on Beit-Me`on, NIV 23 to Kiriathaim, Beth Gamul and Beth Meon, HNV 24 and on Keriyot, and on Botzrah, and on all the cities of the land of Mo'av, far or near. NIV 24 to Kerioth and Bozrah-- to all the towns of Moab, far and near. HNV 25 The horn of Mo'av is cut off, and his arm is broken, says the LORD. NIV 25 Moab's horn is cut off; her arm is broken," declares the LORD. HNV 26 Make you him drunken; for he magnified himself against the LORD: and Mo'av shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision. NIV 26 "Make her drunk, for she has defied the LORD. Let Moab wallow in her vomit; let her be an object of ridicule. HNV 27 For wasn't Yisra'el a derision to you? was he found among thieves? for as often as you speak of him, you wag the head. NIV 27 Was not Israel the object of your ridicule? Was she caught among thieves, that you shake your head in scorn whenever you speak of her? HNV 28 You inhabitants of Mo'av, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock; and be like the dove that makes her nest over the mouth of the abyss. NIV 28 Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks, you who live in Moab. Be like a dove that makes its nest at the mouth of a cave. HNV 29 We have heard of the pride of Mo'av, [that] he is very proud; his loftiness, and his pride, and his arrogance, and the haughtiness of his heart. NIV 29 "We have heard of Moab's pride-- her overweening pride and conceit, her pride and arrogance and the haughtiness of her heart. HNV 30 I know his wrath, says the LORD, that it is nothing; his boastings have worked nothing. NIV 30 I know her insolence but it is futile," declares the LORD, "and her boasts accomplish nothing. HNV 31 Therefore will I wail for Mo'av; yes, I will cry out for all Mo'av: for the men of Kir-Heres shall they mourn. NIV 31 Therefore I wail over Moab, for all Moab I cry out, I moan for the men of Kir Hareseth. HNV 32 With more than the weeping of Ya`zer will I weep for you, vine of Sivmah: your branches passed over the sea, they reached even to the sea of Ya`zer: on your summer fruits and on your vintage the destroyer is fallen. NIV 32 I weep for you, as Jazer weeps, O vines of Sibmah. Your branches spread as far as the sea; they reached as far as the sea of Jazer. The destroyer has fallen on your ripened fruit and grapes. HNV 33 Gladness and joy is taken away from the fruitful field and from the land of Mo'av; and I have caused wine to cease from the wine presses: none shall tread with shouting; the shouting shall be no shouting. NIV 33 Joy and gladness are gone from the orchards and fields of Moab. I have stopped the flow of wine from the presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy. Although there are shouts, they are not shouts of joy. HNV 34 From the cry of Heshbon even to El`aleh, even to Yahatz have they uttered their voice, from Tzo`ar even to Horonayim, to `Eglat, Shelishiyah: for the waters of Nimrim also shall become desolate. NIV 34 "The sound of their cry rises from Heshbon to Elealeh and Jahaz, from Zoar as far as Horonaim and Eglath Shelishiyah, for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up. HNV 35 Moreover I will cause to cease in Mo'av, says the LORD, him who offers in the high place, and him who burns incense to his gods. NIV 35 In Moab I will put an end to those who make offerings on the high places and burn incense to their gods," declares the LORD. HNV 36 Therefore my heart sounds for Mo'av like pipes, and my heart sounds like pipes for the men of Kir-Heres: therefore the abundance that he has gotten is perished. NIV 36 "So my heart laments for Moab like a flute; it laments like a flute for the men of Kir Hareseth. The wealth they acquired is gone. HNV 37 For every head is bald, and every beard clipped: on all the hands are cuttings, and on the loins sackcloth. NIV 37 Every head is shaved and every beard cut off; every hand is slashed and every waist is covered with sackcloth. HNV 38 On all the housetops of Mo'av and in the streets of it there is lamentation every where; for I have broken Mo'av like a vessel in which none delights, says the LORD. NIV 38 On all the roofs in Moab and in the public squares there is nothing but mourning, for I have broken Moab like a jar that no one wants," declares the LORD. HNV 39 How is it broken down! [how] do they wail! how has Mo'av turned the back with shame! so shall Mo'av become a derision and a terror to all who are round about him. NIV 39 "How shattered she is! How they wail! How Moab turns her back in shame! Moab has become an object of ridicule, an object of horror to all those around her." HNV 40 For thus says the LORD: Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread out his wings against Mo'av. NIV 40 This is what the LORD says: "Look! An eagle is swooping down, spreading its wings over Moab. HNV 41 Keriyot is taken, and the strongholds are seized, and the heart of the mighty men of Mo'av at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs. NIV 41 Kerioth will be captured and the strongholds taken. In that day the hearts of Moab's warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor. HNV 42 Mo'av shall be destroyed from being a people, because he has magnified himself against the LORD. NIV 42 Moab will be destroyed as a nation because she defied the LORD. HNV 43 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are on you, inhabitant of Mo'av, says the LORD. NIV 43 Terror and pit and snare await you, O people of Moab," declares the LORD. HNV 44 He who flees from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he who gets up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring on him, even on Mo'av, the year of their visitation, says the LORD. NIV 44 "Whoever flees from the terror will fall into a pit, whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare; for I will bring upon Moab the year of her punishment," declares the LORD. HNV 45 Those who fled stand without strength under the shadow of Heshbon; for a fire is gone forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sichon, and has devoured the corner of Mo'av, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones. NIV 45 "In the shadow of Heshbon the fugitives stand helpless, for a fire has gone out from Heshbon, a blaze from the midst of Sihon; it burns the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of the noisy boasters. HNV 46 Woe to you, O Mo'av! the people of Kemosh is undone; for your sons are taken away captive, and your daughters into captivity. NIV 46 Woe to you, O Moab! The people of Chemosh are destroyed; your sons are taken into exile and your daughters into captivity. HNV 47 Yet will I bring back the captivity of Mo'av in the latter days, says the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Mo'av. NIV 47 "Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab in days to come," declares the LORD. Here ends the judgment on Moab.
