Job 12

NLT 1 Then Job spoke again: NIV 1 Then Job replied: NLT 2 "You really know everything, don't you? And when you die, wisdom will die with you! NIV 2 "Doubtless you are the people, and wisdom will die with you! NLT 3 Well, I know a few things myself -- and you're no better than I am. Who doesn't know these things you've been saying? NIV 3 But I have a mind as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know all these things? NLT 4 Yet my friends laugh at me. I am a man who calls on God and receives an answer. I am a just and blameless man, yet they laugh at me. NIV 4 "I have become a laughingstock to my friends, though I called upon God and he answered-- a mere laughingstock, though righteous and blameless! NLT 5 People who are at ease mock those in trouble. They give a push to people who are stumbling. NIV 5 Men at ease have contempt for misfortune as the fate of those whose feet are slipping. NLT 6 But even robbers are left in peace, and those who provoke God -- and God has them in his power -- live in safety!" NIV 6 The tents of marauders are undisturbed, and those who provoke God are secure-- those who carry their god in their hands. NLT 7 "Ask the animals, and they will teach you. Ask the birds of the sky, and they will tell you. NIV 7 "But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; NLT 8 Speak to the earth, and it will instruct you. Let the fish of the sea speak to you. NIV 8 or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. NLT 9 They all know that the LORD has done this. NIV 9 Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? NLT 10 For the life of every living thing is in his hand, and the breath of all humanity. NIV 10 In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. NLT 11 Just as the mouth tastes good food, so the ear tests the words it hears. NIV 11 Does not the ear test words as the tongue tastes food? NLT 12 Wisdom belongs to the aged, and understanding to those who have lived many years." NIV 12 Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding? NLT 13 "But true wisdom and power are with God; counsel and understanding are his. NIV 13 "To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his. NLT 14 What he destroys cannot be rebuilt. When he closes in on someone, there is no escape. NIV 14 What he tears down cannot be rebuilt; the man he imprisons cannot be released. NLT 15 If he holds back the rain, the earth becomes a desert. If he releases the waters, they flood the earth." NIV 15 If he holds back the waters, there is drought; if he lets them loose, they devastate the land. NLT 16 "Yes, strength and wisdom are with him; deceivers and deceived are both in his power. NIV 16 To him belong strength and victory; both deceived and deceiver are his. NLT 17 He leads counselors away stripped of good judgment; he drives judges to madness. NIV 17 He leads counselors away stripped and makes fools of judges. NLT 18 He removes the royal robe of kings. With ropes around their waist, they are led away. NIV 18 He takes off the shackles put on by kings and ties a loincloth around their waist. NLT 19 He leads priests away stripped of status; he overthrows the mighty. NIV 19 He leads priests away stripped and overthrows men long established. NLT 20 He silences the trusted adviser, and he removes the insight of the elders. NIV 20 He silences the lips of trusted advisers and takes away the discernment of elders. NLT 21 He pours disgrace upon princes and confiscates weapons from the strong." NIV 21 He pours contempt on nobles and disarms the mighty. NLT 22 "He floods the darkness with light; he brings light to the deepest gloom. NIV 22 He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings deep shadows into the light. NLT 23 He raises up nations, and he destroys them. He makes nations expand, and he abandons them. NIV 23 He makes nations great, and destroys them; he enlarges nations, and disperses them. NLT 24 He takes away the understanding of kings, and he leaves them wandering in a wasteland without a path. NIV 24 He deprives the leaders of the earth of their reason; he sends them wandering through a trackless waste. NLT 25 They grope in the darkness without a light. He makes them stagger like drunkards." NIV 25 They grope in darkness with no light; he makes them stagger like drunkards.
