Job 15

ASV 1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said, NIV 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: ASV 2 Should a wise man make answer with vain knowledge, And fill himself with the east wind? NIV 2 "Would a wise man answer with empty notions or fill his belly with the hot east wind? ASV 3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk, Or with speeches wherewith he can do no good? NIV 3 Would he argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value? ASV 4 Yea, thou doest away with fear, And hinderest devotion before God. NIV 4 But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God. ASV 5 For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth, And thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. NIV 5 Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty. ASV 6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; Yea, thine own lips testify against thee. NIV 6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you. ASV 7 Art thou the first man that was born? Or wast thou brought forth before the hills? NIV 7 "Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? ASV 8 Hast thou heard the secret counsel of God? And dost thou limit wisdom to thyself? NIV 8 Do you listen in on God's council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself ? ASV 9 What knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, which is not in us? NIV 9 What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have? ASV 10 With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, Much elder than thy father. NIV 10 The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father. ASV 11 Are the consolations of God too small for thee, Even the word that is gentle toward thee? NIV 11 Are God's consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you? ASV 12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away? And why do thine eyes flash, NIV 12 Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, ASV 13 That against God thou turnest thy spirit, And lettest words go out of thy mouth? NIV 13 so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth? ASV 14 What is man, that he should be clean? And he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? NIV 14 "What is man, that he could be pure, or one born of woman, that he could be righteous? ASV 15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones; Yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight: NIV 15 If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, ASV 16 How much less one that is abominable and corrupt, A man that drinketh iniquity like water! NIV 16 how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil like water! ASV 17 I will show thee, hear thou me; And that which I have seen I will declare: NIV 17 "Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen, ASV 18 (Which wise men have told From their fathers, and have not hid it; NIV 18 what wise men have declared, hiding nothing received from their fathers ASV 19 Unto whom alone the land was given, And no stranger passed among them): NIV 19 (to whom alone the land was given when no alien passed among them): ASV 20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor. NIV 20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless through all the years stored up for him. ASV 21 A sound of terrors is in his ears; In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. NIV 21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him. ASV 22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, And he is waited for of the sword. NIV 22 He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword. ASV 23 He wandereth abroad for bread, [saying], Where is it? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. NIV 23 He wanders about--food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at hand. ASV 24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. NIV 24 Distress and anguish fill him with terror; they overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack, ASV 25 Because he hath stretched out his hand against God, And behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty; NIV 25 because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty, ASV 26 He runneth upon him with a [stiff] neck, With the thick bosses of his bucklers; NIV 26 defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield. ASV 27 Because he hath covered his face with his fatness, And gathered fat upon his loins; NIV 27 "Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh, ASV 28 And he hath dwelt in desolate cities, In houses which no man inhabited, Which were ready to become heaps; NIV 28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. ASV 29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth. NIV 29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. ASV 30 He shall not depart out of darkness; The flame shall dry up his branches, And by the breath of [God's] mouth shall he go away. NIV 30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. ASV 31 Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself; For vanity shall be his recompense. NIV 31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return. ASV 32 It shall be accomplished before his time, And his branch shall not be green. NIV 32 Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. ASV 33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, And shall cast off his flower as the olive-tree. NIV 33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. ASV 34 For the company of the godless shall be barren, And fire shall consume the tents of bribery. NIV 34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. ASV 35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, And their heart prepareth deceit. NIV 35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit."
