Job 15

CSB 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: NIV 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: CSB 2 Does a wise man answer with empty counsel or fill himself with the hot east wind? NIV 2 "Would a wise man answer with empty notions or fill his belly with the hot east wind? CSB 3 Should he argue with useless talk or with words that serve no good purpose? NIV 3 Would he argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value? CSB 4 But you even undermine the fear [of God] and hinder meditation before Him. NIV 4 But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God. CSB 5 Your iniquity teaches you what to say, and you choose the language of the crafty. NIV 5 Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty. CSB 6 Your own mouth condemns you, not I; your own lips testify against you. NIV 6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you. CSB 7 Were you the first person ever born, or were you brought forth before the hills? NIV 7 "Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? CSB 8 Do you listen in on the council of God, or have a monopoly on wisdom? NIV 8 Do you listen in on God's council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself ? CSB 9 What do you know that we don't? [What] do you understand that is not [clear] to us? NIV 9 What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have? CSB 10 Both the gray-haired and the elderly are with us, men older than your father. NIV 10 The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father. CSB 11 Are God's consolations not enough for you, even the words that [deal] gently with you? NIV 11 Are God's consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you? CSB 12 Why has your heart misled you, and why do your eyes flash NIV 12 Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, CSB 13 as you turn your anger against God and allow such words to leave your mouth? NIV 13 so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth? CSB 14 What is man, that he should be pure, or one born of woman, that he should be righteous? NIV 14 "What is man, that he could be pure, or one born of woman, that he could be righteous? CSB 15 If God puts no trust in His holy ones and the heavens are not pure in His sight, NIV 15 If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, CSB 16 how much less one who is revolting and corrupt, who drinks injustice like water? NIV 16 how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil like water! CSB 17 Listen to me and I will inform you. I will describe what I have seen, NIV 17 "Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen, CSB 18 what was declared by wise men and was not suppressed by their ancestors, NIV 18 what wise men have declared, hiding nothing received from their fathers CSB 19 the land was given to them alone when no foreigner passed among them. NIV 19 (to whom alone the land was given when no alien passed among them): CSB 20 A wicked man writhes in pain all his days; few years are stored up for the ruthless. NIV 20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless through all the years stored up for him. CSB 21 Dreadful sounds fill his ears; when he is at peace, a robber attacks him. NIV 21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him. CSB 22 He doesn't believe he will return from darkness; he is destined for the sword. NIV 22 He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword. CSB 23 He wanders about for food, [saying,] "Where is it?" He knows the day of darkness is at hand. NIV 23 He wanders about--food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at hand. CSB 24 Trouble and distress terrify him, overwhelming him like a king prepared for battle. NIV 24 Distress and anguish fill him with terror; they overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack, CSB 25 For he has stretched out his hand against God and has arrogantly opposed the Almighty. NIV 25 because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty, CSB 26 He rushes headlong at Him with his thick, studded shields. NIV 26 defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield. CSB 27 Though his face is covered with fat and his waistline bulges with it, NIV 27 "Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh, CSB 28 he will dwell in ruined cities, in abandoned houses destined to become piles of rubble. NIV 28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. CSB 29 He will no longer be rich; his wealth will not endure. His possessions will not spread over the land. NIV 29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. CSB 30 He will not escape from the darkness; flames will wither his shoots, and he will depart by the breath of God's mouth. NIV 30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. CSB 31 Let him not put trust in worthless things, being led astray, for what he gets in exchange will prove worthless. NIV 31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return. CSB 32 It will be accomplished before his time, and his branch will not flourish. NIV 32 Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. CSB 33 He will be like a vine that drops its unripe grapes and like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms. NIV 33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. CSB 34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who offer bribes. NIV 34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. CSB 35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb prepares deception. NIV 35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit."
