Job 15

DBY 1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, NIV 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: DBY 2 Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind, NIV 2 "Would a wise man answer with empty notions or fill his belly with the hot east wind? DBY 3 Reasoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good? NIV 3 Would he argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value? DBY 4 Yea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before God. NIV 4 But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God. DBY 5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty. NIV 5 Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty. DBY 6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee. NIV 6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you. DBY 7 Art thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills? NIV 7 "Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? DBY 8 Hast thou listened in the secret council of God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself? NIV 8 Do you listen in on God's council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself ? DBY 9 What knowest thou that we know not? [what] understandest thou which is not in us? NIV 9 What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have? DBY 10 Both the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father. NIV 10 The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father. DBY 11 Are the consolations of God too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee? NIV 11 Are God's consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you? DBY 12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink? NIV 12 Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, DBY 13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest words go out of thy mouth? NIV 13 so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth? DBY 14 What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? NIV 14 "What is man, that he could be pure, or one born of woman, that he could be righteous? DBY 15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight: NIV 15 If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, DBY 16 How much less the abominable and corrupt, -- man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water! NIV 16 how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil like water! DBY 17 I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare; NIV 17 "Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen, DBY 18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden; NIV 18 what wise men have declared, hiding nothing received from their fathers DBY 19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them. NIV 19 (to whom alone the land was given when no alien passed among them): DBY 20 All his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent. NIV 20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless through all the years stored up for him. DBY 21 The sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him. NIV 21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him. DBY 22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword. NIV 22 He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword. DBY 23 He wandereth abroad for bread, -- where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. NIV 23 He wanders about--food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at hand. DBY 24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle. NIV 24 Distress and anguish fill him with terror; they overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack, DBY 25 For he hath stretched out his hand against God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty: NIV 25 because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty, DBY 26 He runneth against him, with [outstretched] neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers; NIV 26 defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield. DBY 27 For he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon [his] flanks. NIV 27 "Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh, DBY 28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps. NIV 28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. DBY 29 He shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth. NIV 29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. DBY 30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away. NIV 30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. DBY 31 Let him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense; NIV 31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return. DBY 32 It shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green. NIV 32 Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. DBY 33 He shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive. NIV 33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. DBY 34 For the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery. NIV 34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. DBY 35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit. NIV 35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit."
