Job 16

CEB 1 Then Job answered: NIV 1 Then Job replied: CEB 2 I've heard many things like these. All of you are sorry comforters. NIV 2 "I have heard many things like these; miserable comforters are you all! CEB 3 Will windy talk ever cease; what bothers you that you must argue? NIV 3 Will your long-winded speeches never end? What ails you that you keep on arguing? CEB 4 In your situation I could speak like you; I could put words together to oppose you, shake my head over you. NIV 4 I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could make fine speeches against you and shake my head at you. CEB 5 I could heap up words, strengthen you with my speech; my trembling lips would be held in check. NIV 5 But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief. CEB 6 If I speak, my pain is not eased; if I hold back, what have I lost? NIV 6 "Yet if I speak, my pain is not relieved; and if I refrain, it does not go away. CEB 7 Now God has surely worn me out. You have destroyed my entire group, NIV 7 Surely, O God, you have worn me out; you have devastated my entire household. CEB 8 seized me, which became grounds for an accusation. My leanness rises to bear witness against me. NIV 8 You have bound me--and it has become a witness; my gauntness rises up and testifies against me. CEB 9 His anger tears me and afflicts me; he slashes at me with his teeth. My enemy pierces me with his eyes. NIV 9 God assails me and tears me in his anger and gnashes his teeth at me; my opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes. CEB 10 They open their mouths at me and strike my cheek in a taunt; they gang up on me. NIV 10 Men open their mouths to jeer at me; they strike my cheek in scorn and unite together against me. CEB 11 God delivers me to a criminal and forces me into the hands of the wicked. NIV 11 God has turned me over to evil men and thrown me into the clutches of the wicked. CEB 12 I was at rest, but he shattered me, seized me by the back of my neck, dashed me into pieces; he raised me up for his target. NIV 12 All was well with me, but he shattered me; he seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target; CEB 13 His archers surround me; he cuts my kidneys open without pity and doesn't care, pours my gall on the ground, NIV 13 his archers surround me. Without pity, he pierces my kidneys and spills my gall on the ground. CEB 14 bursts me open over and over, runs against me like a strong man. NIV 14 Again and again he bursts upon me; he rushes at me like a warrior. CEB 15 I've sewed rough cloth over my skin and buried my dignity in the dust. NIV 15 "I have sewed sackcloth over my skin and buried my brow in the dust. CEB 16 My face is red from crying, and dark gloom hangs on my eyelids. NIV 16 My face is red with weeping, deep shadows ring my eyes; CEB 17 But there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure. NIV 17 yet my hands have been free of violence and my prayer is pure. CEB 18 Earth, don't cover my blood; let my outcry never cease. NIV 18 "O earth, do not cover my blood; may my cry never be laid to rest! CEB 19 Surely now my witness stands in heaven; my advocate is on high; NIV 19 Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. CEB 20 my go-between, my friend. While my eyes drip tears to God, NIV 20 My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; CEB 21 let him plead with God for a human being, like a person pleads for a friend. NIV 21 on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend. CEB 22 A number of years will surely pass, and then I'll walk a path that I won't return. NIV 22 "Only a few years will pass before I go on the journey of no return.
