NAS 1 "Do you know the time the mountain goats give birth? Do you observe the calving of the deer? NIV 1 "Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you watch when the doe bears her fawn? NAS 2 "Can you count the months they fulfill, Or do you know the time they give birth? NIV 2 Do you count the months till they bear? Do you know the time they give birth? NAS 3 "They kneel down, they bring forth their young, They get rid of their labor pains. NIV 3 They crouch down and bring forth their young; their labor pains are ended. NAS 4 "Their offspring become strong, they grow up in the open field; They leave and do not return to them. NIV 4 Their young thrive and grow strong in the wilds; they leave and do not return. NAS 5 "Who sent out the wild donkey free? And who loosed the bonds of the swift donkey, NIV 5 "Who let the wild donkey go free? Who untied his ropes? NAS 6 To whom I gave the wilderness for a home And the salt land for his dwelling place? NIV 6 I gave him the wasteland as his home, the salt flats as his habitat. NAS 7 "He scorns the tumult of the city, The shoutings of the driver he does not hear. NIV 7 He laughs at the commotion in the town; he does not hear a driver's shout. NAS 8 "He explores the mountains for his pasture And searches after every green thing. NIV 8 He ranges the hills for his pasture and searches for any green thing. NAS 9 "Will the wild ox consent to serve you, Or will he spend the night at your manger? NIV 9 "Will the wild ox consent to serve you? Will he stay by your manger at night? NAS 10 "Can you bind the wild ox in a furrow with ropes, Or will he harrow the valleys after you? NIV 10 Can you hold him to the furrow with a harness? Will he till the valleys behind you? NAS 11 "Will you trust him because his strength is great And leave your labor to him? NIV 11 Will you rely on him for his great strength? Will you leave your heavy work to him? NAS 12 "Will you have faith in him that he will return your grain And gather it from your threshing floor? NIV 12 Can you trust him to bring in your grain and gather it to your threshing floor? NAS 13 "The ostriches' wings flap joyously With the pinion and plumage of love, NIV 13 "The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, but they cannot compare with the pinions and feathers of the stork. NAS 14 For she abandons her eggs to the earth And warms them in the dust, NIV 14 She lays her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand, NAS 15 And she forgets that a foot may crush them, Or that a wild beast may trample them. NIV 15 unmindful that a foot may crush them, that some wild animal may trample them. NAS 16 "She treats her young cruelly, as if they were not hers; Though her labor be in vain, she is unconcerned ; NIV 16 She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers; she cares not that her labor was in vain, NAS 17 Because God has made her forget wisdom, And has not given her a share of understanding. NIV 17 for God did not endow her with wisdom or give her a share of good sense. NAS 18 "When she lifts herself on high, She laughs at the horse and his rider. NIV 18 Yet when she spreads her feathers to run, she laughs at horse and rider. NAS 19 "Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with a mane? NIV 19 "Do you give the horse his strength or clothe his neck with a flowing mane? NAS 20 "Do you make him leap like the locust? His majestic snorting is terrible. NIV 20 Do you make him leap like a locust, striking terror with his proud snorting? NAS 21 "He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength; He goes out to meet the weapons. NIV 21 He paws fiercely, rejoicing in his strength, and charges into the fray. NAS 22 "He laughs at fear and is not dismayed; And he does not turn back from the sword. NIV 22 He laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; he does not shy away from the sword. NAS 23 "The quiver rattles against him, The flashing spear and javelin. NIV 23 The quiver rattles against his side, along with the flashing spear and lance. NAS 24 "With shaking and rage he races over the ground, And he does not stand still at the voice of the trumpet. NIV 24 In frenzied excitement he eats up the ground; he cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds. NAS 25 "As often as the trumpet sounds he says, 'Aha!' And he scents the battle from afar, And the thunder of the captains and the war cry. NIV 25 At the blast of the trumpet he snorts, 'Aha!' He catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry. NAS 26 "Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars, Stretching his wings toward the south? NIV 26 "Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread his wings toward the south? NAS 27 "Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up And makes his nest on high? NIV 27 Does the eagle soar at your command and build his nest on high? NAS 28 "On the cliff he dwells and lodges, Upon the rocky crag, an inaccessible place. NIV 28 He dwells on a cliff and stays there at night; a rocky crag is his stronghold. NAS 29 "From there he spies out food; His eyes see it from afar. NIV 29 From there he seeks out his food; his eyes detect it from afar. NAS 30 "His young ones also suck up blood; And where the slain are, there is he." NIV 30 His young ones feast on blood, and where the slain are, there is he."
