VULA 1 verbum Domini quod factum est ad Iohel filium Fatuhel NIV 1 The word of the LORD that came to Joel son of Pethuel. VULA 2 audite hoc senes et auribus percipite omnes habitatores terrae si factum est istud in diebus vestris aut in diebus patrum vestrorum NIV 2 Hear this, you elders; listen, all who live in the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your forefathers? VULA 3 super hoc filiis vestris narrate et filii vestri filiis suis et filii eorum generationi alterae NIV 3 Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation. VULA 4 residuum erucae comedit lucusta et residuum lucustae comedit bruchus et residuum bruchi comedit rubigo NIV 4 What the locust swarm has left the great locusts have eaten; what the great locusts have left the young locusts have eaten; what the young locusts have left other locusts have eaten. VULA 5 expergescimini ebrii et flete et ululate omnes qui bibitis vinum in dulcedine quoniam periit ab ore vestro NIV 5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine; wail because of the new wine, for it has been snatched from your lips. It has stripped off their bark and thrown it away, leaving their branches white. VULA 8 plange quasi virgo accincta sacco super virum pubertatis suae NIV 8 Mourn like a virgin in sackcloth grieving for the husband of her youth. VULA 9 periit sacrificium et libatio de domo Domini luxerunt sacerdotes ministri Domini NIV 9 Grain offerings and drink offerings are cut off from the house of the LORD. The priests are in mourning, those who minister before the LORD. VULA 10 depopulata est regio luxit humus quoniam devastatum est triticum confusum est vinum elanguit oleum NIV 10 The fields are ruined, the ground is dried up; the grain is destroyed, the new wine is dried up, the oil fails. VULA 11 confusi sunt agricolae ululaverunt vinitores super frumento et hordeo quia periit messis agri NIV 11 Despair, you farmers, wail, you vine growers; grieve for the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the field is destroyed. VULA 12 vinea confusa est et ficus elanguit malogranatum et palma et malum et omnia ligna agri aruerunt quia confusum est gaudium a filiis hominum NIV 12 The vine is dried up and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree-- all the trees of the field--are dried up. Surely the joy of mankind is withered away. VULA 13 accingite vos et plangite sacerdotes ululate ministri altaris ingredimini cubate in sacco ministri Dei mei quoniam interiit de domo Dei vestri sacrificium et libatio NIV 13 Put on sackcloth, O priests, and mourn; wail, you who minister before the altar. Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you who minister before my God; for the grain offerings and drink offerings are withheld from the house of your God. VULA 14 sanctificate ieiunium vocate coetum congregate senes omnes habitatores terrae in domum Dei vestri et clamate ad Dominum NIV 14 Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD. VULA 15 a a a diei quia prope est dies Domini et quasi vastitas a potente veniet NIV 15 Alas for that day! For the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty. VULA 16 numquid non coram oculis vestris alimenta perierunt de domo Dei nostri laetitia et exultatio NIV 16 Has not the food been cut off before our very eyes-- joy and gladness from the house of our God? VULA 17 conputruerunt iumenta in stercore suo demolita sunt horrea dissipatae sunt apothecae quoniam confusum est triticum NIV 17 The seeds are shriveled beneath the clods. The storehouses are in ruins, the granaries have been broken down, for the grain has dried up. VULA 18 quid ingemuit animal mugierunt greges armenti quia non est pascua eis sed et greges pecorum disperierunt NIV 18 How the cattle moan! The herds mill about because they have no pasture; even the flocks of sheep are suffering. VULA 19 ad te Domine clamabo quia ignis comedit speciosa deserti et flamma succendit omnia ligna regionis NIV 19 To you, O LORD, I call, for fire has devoured the open pastures and flames have burned up all the trees of the field. VULA 20 sed et bestiae agri quasi area sitiens imbrem suspexerunt ad te quoniam exsiccati sunt fontes aquarum et ignis devoravit speciosa deserti NIV 20 Even the wild animals pant for you; the streams of water have dried up and fire has devoured the open pastures.
