Joel 2:10-21

NRS 10 The earth quakes before them, the heavens tremble. The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. NIV 10 Before them the earth shakes, the sky trembles, the sun and moon are darkened, and the stars no longer shine. NRS 11 The Lord utters his voice at the head of his army; how vast is his host! Numberless are those who obey his command. Truly the day of the Lord is great; terrible indeed—who can endure it? NIV 11 The LORD thunders at the head of his army; his forces are beyond number, and mighty are those who obey his command. The day of the LORD is great; it is dreadful. Who can endure it? NRS 12 Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; NIV 12 "Even now," declares the LORD, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning." NRS 13 rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. NIV 13 Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. NRS 14 Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord, your God? NIV 14 Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing-- grain offerings and drink offerings for the LORD your God. NRS 15 Blow the trumpet in Zion; sanctify a fast; call a solemn assembly; NIV 15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly. NRS 16 gather the people. Sanctify the congregation; assemble the aged; gather the children, even infants at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her canopy. NIV 16 Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber. NRS 17 Between the vestibule and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep. Let them say, "Spare your people, O Lord, and do not make your heritage a mockery, a byword among the nations. Why should it be said among the peoples, "Where is their God?' " NIV 17 Let the priests, who minister before the LORD, weep between the temple porch and the altar. Let them say, "Spare your people, O LORD. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?' " NRS 18 Then the Lord became jealous for his land, and had pity on his people. NIV 18 Then the LORD will be jealous for his land and take pity on his people. NRS 19 In response to his people the Lord said: I am sending you grain, wine, and oil, and you will be satisfied; and I will no more make you a mockery among the nations. NIV 19 The LORD will reply to them: "I am sending you grain, new wine and oil, enough to satisfy you fully; never again will I make you an object of scorn to the nations. NRS 20 I will remove the northern army far from you, and drive it into a parched and desolate land, its front into the eastern sea, and its rear into the western sea; its stench and foul smell will rise up. Surely he has done great things! NIV 20 "I will drive the northern army far from you, pushing it into a parched and barren land, with its front columns going into the eastern sea and those in the rear into the western sea. And its stench will go up; its smell will rise." Surely he has done great things. NRS 21 Do not fear, O soil; be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things! NIV 21 Be not afraid, O land; be glad and rejoice. Surely the LORD has done great things.
