John 1

ASV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ASV 2 The same was in the beginning with God. NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. ASV 3 All things were made through him; and without him was not anything made that hath been made. NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. ASV 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. ASV 5 And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not. NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. ASV 6 There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John. NIV 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. ASV 7 The same came for witness, that he might bear witness of the light, that all might believe through him. NIV 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. ASV 8 He was not the light, but [came] that he might bear witness of the light. NIV 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. ASV 9 There was the true light, [even the light] which lighteth every man, coming into the world. NIV 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. ASV 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world knew him not. NIV 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. ASV 11 He came unto his own, and they that were his own received him not. NIV 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. ASV 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, [even] to them that believe on his name: NIV 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- ASV 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. ASV 14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth. NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. ASV 15 John beareth witness of him, and crieth, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that cometh after me is become before me: for he was before me. NIV 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " ASV 16 For of his fulness we all received, and grace for grace. NIV 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. ASV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. ASV 18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared [him]. NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known. ASV 19 And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent unto him from Jerusalem priests and Levites to ask him, Who art thou? NIV 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. ASV 20 And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed, I am not the Christ. NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. " ASV 21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he saith, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. NIV 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." ASV 22 They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? NIV 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?" ASV 23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet. NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' " ASV 24 And they had been sent from the Pharisees. NIV 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent ASV 25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why then baptizest thou, if thou art not the Christ, neither Elijah, neither the prophet? NIV 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" ASV 26 John answered them, saying, I baptize in water: in the midst of you standeth one whom ye know not, NIV 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. ASV 27 [even] he that cometh after me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to unloose. NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." ASV 28 These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. ASV 29 On the morrow he seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world! NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! ASV 30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man who is become before me: for he was before me. NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' ASV 31 And I knew him not; but that he should be made manifest to Israel, for this cause came I baptizing in water. NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." ASV 32 And John bare witness, saying, I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven; and it abode upon him. NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. ASV 33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in water, he said unto me, Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and abiding upon him, the same is he that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit. NIV 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' ASV 34 And I have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God. NIV 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God." ASV 35 Again on the morrow John was standing, and two of his disciples; NIV 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. ASV 36 and he looked upon Jesus as he walked, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God! NIV 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" ASV 37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. NIV 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. ASV 38 And Jesus turned, and beheld them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? And they said unto him, Rabbi (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), where abideth thou? NIV 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" ASV 39 He saith unto them, Come, and ye shall see. They came therefore and saw where he abode; and they abode with him that day: it was about the tenth hour. NIV 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. ASV 40 One of the two that heard John [speak], and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. NIV 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. ASV 41 He findeth first his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah (which is, being interpreted, Christ). NIV 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). ASV 42 He brought him unto Jesus. Jesus looked upon him, and said, Thou art Simon the son of John: thou shalt be called Cephas (which is by interpretation, Peter). NIV 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter ). ASV 43 On the morrow he was minded to go forth into Galilee, and he findeth Philip: and Jesus saith unto him, Follow me. NIV 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." ASV 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. NIV 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. ASV 45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. NIV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." ASV 46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. NIV 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. ASV 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! NIV 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false." ASV 48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. NIV 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." ASV 49 Nathanael answered him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art King of Israel. NIV 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." ASV 50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee underneath the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. NIV 50 Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that." ASV 51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. NIV 51 He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
