John 1

CJB 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. CJB 2 He was with God in the beginning. NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. CJB 3 All things came to be through him, and without him nothing made had being. NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. CJB 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. CJB 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not suppressed it. NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. CJB 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was Yochanan. NIV 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. CJB 7 He came to be a testimony, to bear witness concerning the light; so that through him, everyone might put his trust in God and be faithful to him. NIV 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. CJB 8 He himself was not that light; no, he came to bear witness concerning the light. NIV 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. CJB 9 This was the true light, which gives light to everyone entering the world. NIV 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. CJB 10 He was in the world -- the world came to be through him -- yet the world did not know him. NIV 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. CJB 11 He came to his own homeland, yet his own people did not receive him. NIV 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. CJB 12 But to as many as did receive him, to those who put their trust in his person and power, he gave the right to become children of God, NIV 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- CJB 13 not because of bloodline, physical impulse or human intention, but because of God. NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. CJB 14 The Word became a human being and lived with us, and we saw his Sh'khinah, the Sh'khinah of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth. NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. CJB 15 Yochanan witnessed concerning him when he cried out, "This is the man I was talking about when I said, `The one coming after me has come to rank ahead of me, because he existed before me.'" NIV 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " CJB 16 We have all received from his fullness, yes, grace upon grace. NIV 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. CJB 17 For the Torah was given through Moshe; grace and truth came through Yeshua the Messiah. NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. CJB 18 No one has ever seen God; but the only and unique Son, who is identical with God and is at the Father's side -- he has made him known. NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known. CJB 19 Here is Yochanan's testimony: when the Judeans sent cohanim and L'vi'im from Yerushalayim to ask him, "Who are you?" NIV 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. CJB 20 he was very straightforward and stated clearly, "I am not the Messiah." NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. " CJB 21 "Then who are you?" they asked him. "Are you Eliyahu?" "No, I am not," he said. "Are you `the prophet,' the one we're expecting?" "No," he replied. NIV 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." CJB 22 So they said to him, "Who are you? -- so that we can give an answer to the people who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?" NIV 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?" CJB 23 He answered in the words of Yesha`yahu the prophet, "I am The voice of someone crying out: `In the desert make the way of ADONAI straight!'" NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' " CJB 24 Some of those who had been sent were P'rushim. NIV 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent CJB 25 They asked him, "If you are neither the Messiah nor Eliyahu nor `the prophet,' then why are you immersing people?" NIV 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" CJB 26 To them Yochanan replied, "I am immersing people in water, but among you is standing someone whom you don't know. NIV 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. CJB 27 He is the one coming after me -- I'm not good enough even to untie his sandal!" NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." CJB 28 All this took place in Beit-Anyah, east of the Yarden, where Yochanan was immersing. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. CJB 29 The next day, Yochanan saw Yeshua coming toward him and said, "Look! God's lamb! The one who is taking away the sin of the world! NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! CJB 30 This is the man I was talking about when I said, `After me is coming someone who has come to rank above me, because he existed before me.' NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' CJB 31 I myself did not know who he was, but the reason I came immersing with water was so that he might be made known to Isra'el." NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." CJB 32 Then Yochanan gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and remaining on him. NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. CJB 33 I myself did not know who he was, but the one who sent me to immerse in water said to me, `The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is the one who immerses in the Ruach HaKodesh.' NIV 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' CJB 34 And I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God." NIV 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God." CJB 35 The next day, Yochanan was again standing with two of his talmidim. NIV 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. CJB 36 On seeing Yeshua walking by, he said, "Look! God's lamb!" NIV 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" CJB 37 His two talmidim heard him speaking, and they followed Yeshua. NIV 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. CJB 38 Yeshua turned and saw them following him, and he asked them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi!" (which means "Teacher!") "Where are you staying?" NIV 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" CJB 39 He said to them, "Come and see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and remained with him the rest of the day -- it was about four o'clock in the afternoon. NIV 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. CJB 40 One of the two who had heard Yochanan and had followed Yeshua was Andrew the brother of Shim`on Kefa. NIV 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. CJB 41 The first thing he did was to find his brother Shim`on and tell him, "We've found the Mashiach!" (The word means "one who has been anointed.") NIV 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). CJB 42 He took him to Yeshua. Looking at him, Yeshua said, "You are Shim`on Bar-Yochanan; you will be known as Kefa." (The name means "rock.") NIV 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter ). CJB 43 The next day, having decided to leave for the Galil, Yeshua found Philip and said, "Follow me!" NIV 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." CJB 44 Philip was from Beit-Tzaidah, the town where Andrew and Kefa lived. NIV 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. CJB 45 Philip found Natan'el and told him, "We've found the one that Moshe wrote about in the Torah, also the Prophets -- it's Yeshua Ben-Yosef from Natzeret!" NIV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." CJB 46 Natan'el answered him, "Natzeret? Can anything good come from there?" "Come and see," Philip said to him. NIV 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. CJB 47 Yeshua saw Natan'el coming toward him and remarked about him, "Here's a true son of Isra'el -- nothing false in him!" NIV 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false." CJB 48 Natan'el said to him, "How do you know me?" Yeshua answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." NIV 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." CJB 49 Natan'el said, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Isra'el!" NIV 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." CJB 50 Yeshua answered him, "you believe all this just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that!" NIV 50 Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that." CJB 51 Then he said to him, "Yes indeed! I tell you that you will see heaven opened and the angels of God going up and coming down on the Son of Man!" NIV 51 He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
