John 1

CSB 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. CSB 2 He was with God in the beginning. NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. CSB 3 All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created. NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. CSB 4 Life was in Him, and that life was the light of men. NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. CSB 5 That light shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it. NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. CSB 6 There was a man named John who was sent from God. NIV 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. CSB 7 He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him. NIV 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. CSB 8 He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light. NIV 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. CSB 9 The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. NIV 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. CSB 10 He was in the world, and the world was created through Him, yet the world did not recognize Him. NIV 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. CSB 11 He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. NIV 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. CSB 12 But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name, NIV 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- CSB 13 who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God. NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. CSB 14 The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. CSB 15 (John testified concerning Him and exclaimed, "This was the One of whom I said, 'The One coming after me has surpassed me, because He existed before me.' ") NIV 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " CSB 16 Indeed, we have all received grace after grace from His fullness, NIV 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. CSB 17 for although the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. CSB 18 No one has ever seen God. The One and Only Son- the One who is at the Father's side- He has revealed Him. NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known. CSB 19 This is John's testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, "Who are you?" NIV 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. CSB 20 He did not refuse to answer, but he declared: "I am not the Messiah." NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. " CSB 21 "What then?" they asked him. "Are you Elijah?" "I am not," he said. "Are you the Prophet?" "No," he answered. NIV 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." CSB 22 "Who are you, then?" they asked. "We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself?" NIV 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?" CSB 23 He said, "I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord -just as Isaiah the prophet said." NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' " CSB 24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. NIV 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent CSB 25 So they asked him, "Why then do you baptize if you aren't the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?" NIV 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" CSB 26 "I baptize with water," John answered them. "Someone stands among you, but you don't know [Him]. NIV 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. CSB 27 He is the One coming after me, whose sandal strap I'm not worthy to untie." NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." CSB 28 All this happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. CSB 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! CSB 30 This is the One I told you about: 'After me comes a man who has surpassed me, because He existed before me.' NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' CSB 31 I didn't know Him, but I came baptizing with water so He might be revealed to Israel." NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." CSB 32 And John testified, "I watched the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He rested on Him. NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. CSB 33 I didn't know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The One you see the Spirit descending and resting on-He is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' NIV 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' CSB 34 I have seen and testified that He is the Son of God!" NIV 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God." CSB 35 Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. NIV 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. CSB 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look! The Lamb of God!" NIV 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" CSB 37 The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus. NIV 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. CSB 38 When Jesus turned and noticed them following Him, He asked them, "What are you looking for?" They said to Him, "Rabbi" (which means "Teacher"), "where are You staying?" NIV 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" CSB 39 "Come and you'll see," He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. It was about 10 in the morning. NIV 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. CSB 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Him. NIV 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. CSB 41 He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which means "Anointed One"), NIV 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). CSB 42 and he brought [Simon] to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, He said, "You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which means "Rock"). NIV 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter ). CSB 43 The next day He decided to leave for Galilee. Jesus found Philip and told him, "Follow Me!" NIV 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." CSB 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. NIV 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. CSB 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth!" NIV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." CSB 46 "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Nathanael asked him. "Come and see," Philip answered. NIV 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. CSB 47 Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said about him, "Here is a true Israelite; no deceit is in him." NIV 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false." CSB 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you," Jesus answered. NIV 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." CSB 49 "Rabbi," Nathanael replied, "You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" NIV 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." CSB 50 Jesus responded to him, "Do you believe [only] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this." NIV 50 Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that." CSB 51 Then He said, "I assure you: You will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." NIV 51 He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
