John 1

HNV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. HNV 2 The same was in the beginning with God. NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. HNV 3 All things were made through him. Without him was not anything made that has been made. NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. HNV 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. HNV 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn't overcome it. NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. HNV 6 There came a man, sent from God, whose name was Yochanan. NIV 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. HNV 7 The same came as a witness, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him. NIV 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. HNV 8 He was not the light, but was sent that he might testify about the light. NIV 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. HNV 9 The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world. NIV 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. HNV 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn't recognize him. NIV 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. HNV 11 He came to his own, and those who were his own didn't receive him. NIV 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. HNV 12 But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children, to those who believe in his name: NIV 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- HNV 13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. HNV 14 The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. HNV 15 Yochanan testified about him. He cried out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.'" NIV 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " HNV 16 From his fullness we all received grace upon grace. NIV 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. HNV 17 For the law was given through Moshe. Grace and truth came through Yeshua the Messiah. NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. HNV 18 No one has seen God at any time. The one and only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him. NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known. HNV 19 This is Yochanan's testimony, when the Yehudim sent Kohanim and Levites from Yerushalayim to ask him, "Who are you?" NIV 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. HNV 20 He confessed, and didn't deny, but he confessed, "I am not the Messiah." NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. " HNV 21 They asked him, "What then? Are you Eliyah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." NIV 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." HNV 22 They said therefore to him, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" NIV 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?" HNV 23 He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as Yesha`yahu the prophet said." NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' " HNV 24 The ones who had been sent were from the Perushim. NIV 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent HNV 25 They asked him, "Why then do you immerse, if you are not the Messiah, nor Eliyah, nor the Prophet?" NIV 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" HNV 26 Yochanan answered them, "I immerse in water, but among you stands one whom you don't know. NIV 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. HNV 27 He is the one who comes after me, who has come to be before me, whose sandal strap I'm not worthy to untie." NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." HNV 28 These things were done in Beit-Anyah beyond the Yarden, where Yochanan was immersing. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. HNV 29 On the next day, he saw Yeshua coming to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! HNV 30 This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.' NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' HNV 31 I didn't know him, but for this reason I came immersing in water: that he would be revealed to Yisra'el." NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." HNV 32 Yochanan testified, saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him. NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. HNV 33 I didn't recognize him, but he who sent me to immerse in water, he said to me, 'On whoever you will see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he who immerses in the Ruach HaKodesh.' NIV 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' HNV 34 I have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God." NIV 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God." HNV 35 Again, on the next day, Yochanan was standing with two of his talmidim, NIV 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. HNV 36 and he looked at Yeshua as he walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" NIV 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" HNV 37 The two talmidim heard him speak, and they followed Yeshua. NIV 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. HNV 38 Yeshua turned, and saw them following, and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), "where are you staying?" NIV 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" HNV 39 He said to them, "Come, and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour. NIV 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. HNV 40 One of the two who heard Yochanan, and followed him, was Andrai, Shim`on Kefa's brother. NIV 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. HNV 41 He first found his own brother, Shim`on, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which is, being interpreted, Anointed One). NIV 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). HNV 42 He brought him to Yeshua. Yeshua looked at him, and said, "You are Shim`on the son of Yonah. You shall be called Kefa" (which is by interpretation, Rock). NIV 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter ). HNV 43 On the next day, he was determined to go forth into the Galil, and he found Pilipos. Yeshua said to him, "Follow me." NIV 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." HNV 44 Now Pilipos was from Beit-Tzaidah, of the city of Andrai and Kefa. NIV 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. HNV 45 Pilipos found Natan'el, and said to him, "We have found him, of whom Moshe in the law, and the prophets, wrote: Yeshua of Natzeret, the son of Yosef." NIV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." HNV 46 Natan'el said to him, "Can any good thing come out of Natzeret?" Pilipos said to him, "Come and see." NIV 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. HNV 47 Yeshua saw Natan'el coming to him, and said about him, "Behold, an Yisra'elite indeed, in whom is no deceit!" NIV 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false." HNV 48 Natan'el said to him, "How do you know me?" Yeshua answered him, "Before Pilipos called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." NIV 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." HNV 49 Natan'el answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are King of Yisra'el!" NIV 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." HNV 50 Yeshua answered him, "Because I told you, 'I saw you underneath the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these!" NIV 50 Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that." HNV 51 He said to him, "Most assuredly, I tell you, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." NIV 51 He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
