John 1

NRS 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. NRS 2 He was in the beginning with God. NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. NRS 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. NRS 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. NRS 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. NRS 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. NIV 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. NRS 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. NIV 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. NRS 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. NIV 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. NRS 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. NIV 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. NRS 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. NIV 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. NRS 11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. NIV 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. NRS 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, NIV 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- NRS 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. NRS 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. NRS 15 (John testified to him and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, "He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.' ") NIV 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " NRS 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. NIV 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. NRS 17 The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. NRS 18 No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known. NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known. NRS 19 This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" NIV 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. NRS 20 He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, "I am not the Messiah." NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. " NRS 21 And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No." NIV 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." NRS 22 Then they said to him, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" NIV 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?" NRS 23 He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, "Make straight the way of the Lord,' " as the prophet Isaiah said. NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' " NRS 24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. NIV 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent NRS 25 They asked him, "Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" NIV 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" NRS 26 John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, NIV 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. NRS 27 the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal." NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." NRS 28 This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. NRS 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! NRS 30 This is he of whom I said, "After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.' NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' NRS 31 I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel." NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." NRS 32 And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. NRS 33 I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, "He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' NIV 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' NRS 34 And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God." NIV 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God." NRS 35 The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, NIV 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. NRS 36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" NIV 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" NRS 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. NIV 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. NRS 38 When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?" NIV 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" NRS 39 He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. NIV 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. NRS 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. NIV 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. NRS 41 He first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed ). NIV 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). NRS 42 He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter ). NIV 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter ). NRS 43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." NIV 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." NRS 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. NIV 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. NRS 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth." NIV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." NRS 46 Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." NIV 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. NRS 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, "Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!" NIV 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false." NRS 48 Nathanael asked him, "Where did you get to know me?" Jesus answered, "I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you." NIV 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." NRS 49 Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" NIV 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." NRS 50 Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these." NIV 50 Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that." NRS 51 And he said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." NIV 51 He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
